Why did Dell make the bracket two slots? What a pain in the arse.

Because it's dell... so sad... Considering the card only has a 1 slot cooling solution, having a double bracket card is just to annoy you...

the $1.99 is niec but paying $8 in shipping is kind of high not to mention taxes aswell... I hear you can just email arctic cooling.

been a while since i checked this thread..lol

Im not sure about the double slot bit, there is no TV-out on the cards, so its not an Ultra board thru and thru.....im guessing Dell ordered Ultra boards, then had a twin DVi plate made up without TV-out, possibly a power issue, Dells power supplies are conservative in the figure, but usually very well made, try taking one out and lifting it, heavy buggers! However its never wise to tax a power supply too much and i figure Dell assumes people spending this much money will most likely have two HDD, two opticals, etc etc.

Being honest, at the time Dell put these in their puters to begin with Doom3 was happily ruling the gaming roost, and i think Dell was wondering if it might be smart to offer the GTO first, then phase in a Ultra as well....but HL2 suddenly made its announcements to definite release by pre-loading files to steam users and i think Dell decided it might be better to stick with ATi cards at the top range and just keep with GTO in the middle to please more people.

Or maybe im speaking total and utter pooh....lol

anyway, your welcome Yilar, glad to be helpful

i just bought a pci slot system exhaust fan, am hoping it will allow me to rack my GTO up a little higher on a permanent basis....hehe
i cant afford to risk putting an NV5 silence on my card,if i feck it up i cant currently afford to replace it, also being PCI-Express there isnt so much choice available atm.

I was getting 64/94 idle/full load temps on my 6800 GTO at 350/900, which is horrid, so I installed the NV5 Silencer, basically adhering to the advice given in this thread. And obviously I had no room to oc the card at those stock temps. Much to my chagrin, after installing the NV5 both my idle and full load temps increased about 3c. Appalled, I took the card back out, and decided to try something radically different. Instead of doing what common sense would tell you to do and using only a light coating of Arctic Silver on the 6800 core, I applied it quite liberally. I used an assload of it, though not enough to have it squish out all over the place when I tightened the heatsink down. The astounding results? Temps decreased substantially. Now I have it oc'd at 400/1100, with an idle temp of 61c, and full load peaks at 81c, even though I only play css, which peaks at about 76c. Still not the greatest temps in the world, but enough to run high gaming settings without melting my card. Also, the 3.6, as quick as it is, keeps case temps pretty warm.

Nice to see this thread active again!

I'm not bothered that my extra 4 pipelines are cripples on my GTO. I played the Half-Life 2 demo today, completely maxxed out, and ran suprisingly well! The only problem was that I had to turn V-Sync on, at a loss of a few frames per second. I think theres no need to get carried away with o/cing your GTO - its still a damn sexy card (IMHO).

I also have the high temperatures - Dell say that they just run hot and thats it really.

Yeah... 400hp sucks.

As far as I know it's 350HP, and yeah, it's a ture american car.
Focusing mainly on looks and alot of big engine power with old fasion technology and bull.
After looking a bit into the new GTO, atleast by pictures and specs it looks a bit more Europien/Japaniese (for the good side), and not like the regular bulky american car.

2005 model is 400 HP/400 lbs/ft

Beany, use Rivatuner to see what its listed as......if the clocks are 350/900 with 12/5 then its a GTO if its something like 325/800 with 8/5 then its a stock 6800, see if it lets u o/c the memory over 900, if it does then its GDDR3 and u should be able to clock up nice and high...

btw guys i bought one of those single PCI slot system exhaust things, its like a fan attached to a PCI bracket, has helped cool my vid card down by a few degrees which is handy
so if u dont fancy getting all hands on with a NV5 Silencer thing try one of these, just search a PC World online shop or something, u cant miss what it is....doesnt cost much either....
only thing is tho, cuz the GTO is a 2 slot card, u might need to remove your modem, move your soundcard over a slot so u can fit this thing in...lol...luckily i dont use a modem (god bless DSL) so it doesnt bother me....

and rikadik, im glad u think its a very good card, i do too, worth the money i paid for it quite happily, even at stock levels it performs in games very nicely

Isn't the bog 6800 a 12/5 setup and not 8/5 setup? If its 8/5 setup, then isn't the 5950 Ultra a better card because its clocked higher?

the totally stock 6800 is an 8 pipe card......

but a lot of card companies have varied what it is so some you will see with 12 pipes...

the original reviews for 6800's in magazines and on websites had it at 8 pipes....

Hmm... interesting

Anyways, I hear people have been bringing the temps on their gtos down by changing the bios. flash the card to use the bfg 6800GT OC bios. Then, try upping the voltage a bit so the fan has a bit more power...

The card should already be receiving enough power, it uses the extra mini power cable as well as the PCI-E slots extra give over an AGP......also not sure if there is an option to increase the fan speed for the card....have to look into that....if its possible it might be worthwile....

im in a quandry for the end of this month......i dunno whether to spend my comission on a new graphics card (X850XT, possibly a PE) or use it for a deposit for a new subwoofer and DVD player for my home cinema setup.
Im thinking the DVD and sub will win out, mainly because my current DVD player, apart from being a bit cheap to begin with, is so making noises and stuff that it shouldnt be..lol

sub i'll be getting is a REL Strata 5, and the DVD player is one of two Denon models, either their £600 or their £900 one...(so around US$1,150 for the sub and either US$1,100 or US$1,650 or so for the DVD player) either way means putting down £300 for a deposit...lol......the rest over 9 months interest free which is handy....

Im sure u guys will vote for the graphics card...lol.....and i must admit, i would love a new thing to play with on my puter...but as i say, the current DVD player for hifi is knackering out, so the most i will end up with this month could be a new mouse to replace this bullsh*t optical mouse Dell gave me....has beautiful tracking, but every so often, all of a sudden it makes you spin on the spot while playing games.....definitely not useful in CS Source...lol

I have to applaud this awesome thread. I have just purchased a new Dell, am eagerly waiting for it to arrive to start my mods. Anyway got a great deal due too a 35% off president day sale and free shipping. Question though...What is the highest FPS people have seen after the OC mod and enabling the pipes?

The stats are below:

Dell Dimension XPS Series - Gen 4 Pentium® 4 Processor 560 with HT Technology (3.60GHz, 1066 FSB)
2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz (2x1GB)

An interesting side note about the Dell 6800 GTO's abilities: It has dual link DVI - not to be confused with dual DVI which is common. Dual link DVI allows it to power higher resolution monitors. Bought one on Ebay, unlocked the extra pipes (so I guess it is an early model) and am running full 2560 by 1600 resolution on my 30 inch Apple Cinema Display. Regular 6800 cards of any clockspeed with only dual DVI on the back can only run this monitor at 1280 by 800. So there is an interesting submarket for these card from people like me who want to run the Apple 30 inch LCD at full resolution. Hope dual link DVI will become a standard...

it appears there is no end to the talents of this cool card from Dell, that if you look earlier in the thread people were vaguely slating as it came from Dell...lol

Maddevildog, im not sure about the HDTV bit.....if you have software thats in full digital form with HDTV lines then i guess if your HDTV TV has a DVI (or adaptable) input then i guess it could work....DVI simply sends a digital signal....im sure DVI can be adapted to HDMI connector which i think HDTV TV's use......might be wrong tho, i havnt dabbled much in HDTV knowledge as it isnt likely to get to England for a number of years....
Also im more into front screen projection systems, best picture, adjustable size, and if you buy a high end model that does 1280 resolution this card can send to it at that ressy, so i imagine HDTV will work, just dont quote me on it...lol

edit: btw, im gonna keepy my GTO for Geforce-friendly games, but sometime in a month or so pick up a X850XT PE cheap as i can for ATi friendly games, namely the expansion for HL2 whenever it comes out, and also if they ever release the ATi Levels for HL2 itself..
assuming they wernt a total myth...lol

Well Used rivatuner and unlocked the pipes and vertex shader, oc'd too 400/1000 with no artificacts or glitches. Here is what I received when I ran my first 3DMARK03. Not bad at all kinda happy with making this card choice, saved me some money.

3DMARK03 Score

Main Test Results

3DMark Score 12469 3DMarks
CPU Score 944 CPUMarks

Wondering if there is a better driver to use, I read that most use 66.81 but is there a newer one that maybe opens up more features?

I was able to unlock my pipes and shader without any problems.....I haven't tried overclocking as I run my rig 24/7, and I can live with its current performance...I have read at least 1 post where a guy took his fan assembly off, and it revealed on the die, his was built off of a Quadro FX3400....I found that interesting, he even had pics to show it....

Here is a picture of Dell 6800 GTO. I discovered the 'Quadro FX 3400' core stamp during HSF upgrade last night. I've purchased this card because of the dual-link dvi capability (for use with IBM T210/Apple Cinema Disply 30").

What is the difference between the GTO and Quadro FX 3400?

I too was able to unlock my pipes and shader without a hitch on my Dell GTO. Currently running OCed at 401/1100 (3dmark05 score of 5494). I haven't tried any higher yet, but there is still room to go. No artifacts playing HL2 or any of the 3dmark05 tests.

This was too sweet a deal and Dell eventually got chips from Nvidia that can't be modified.
I am not sure of the date.

A new article explains the details on Retail cards not sure of Dell now. It Still works apparently on Retail AGP cards but PCIe card are now made with a new chip.

"For PCI Express cards, NVIDIA uses two distinct graphics cores, one with 16 pipelines for GeForce 6800 Ultra/GT (NV45), and the second, which is built from the start with only 12 pipeline. This is NV41 and goes into PCI-E GeForce 6800 cards."
