well, even crippled the GTO isnt too bad, certainly runs Doom3 and HL2 with a reasonable level of eye candy......however for £50 more u get the X800XT so if ordering a system i'd say do that, Dell need to drop the GTO by around £30 to make it more viable now its crippled.......i was quite happy to pay for mine as its unlockable and overclockable.....
only problem is i dont know how much Dell would (if they would) sell you a couple of GTO's for on their own, i got the sneaking suspicion they either wouldnt, or would charge you close to the price of a full blown GT for them....which wouldnt make sense for your point of view.......however in SLI im sure they would still work very nicely despite being crippled, but no, i havnt come across any benchmark scores for that...sorry

hi

I bought also a 6800 GTO. When I used Rivatuner, it can't enabled the pipes. I also test the BIOS flash, it doesn't work.

@knyghtbyte and other woho the mod work: can you please post your vga bios version.?

I have 5.40.02.17.15

I'm still confused over this whole mess...can someone wrap it up? Where does the GTO shipped by Dell line up with the rest of Nvidia's lineup?

coo, some new posts.....thought this thread mighta died by now...lol
(happy cuz my 1st post was in this thread, and now so will my 100th be

RaverXX, my BOIS apparently is 5.40.02.17.15
not sure what that means however, i've never tried to flash it.......if you bought your 6800 GTO more recently then you wont be able to enable, Dell seem to have perfected the art of crippling the pipes.....sorry.....you may be able to OC tho, give it a try, but gently.....check your heat levels too...

MIDIman, the GTO fits in between the standard 6800 and the 6800 GT........it only has the 12/5 settings of a 6800, but the 350 core of a GT, the memory however is an oddball, its shipped at 900mhz 256mb GDDR3.......which is 100mhz lower than the GT........being honest, at stock clocks the GTO performs very close to a GT, much much closer to GT than to normal 6800............i however was one of the lucky ones who can play it at 16/6 375/1000 quite happily which makes it better than a standard GT....but obviously standard GT's can be flashed and OC to Ultra levels in a lot of cases....lol

to someone buying one now, i would say its worth it, specially if u play Doom3 more than HL2, if u prefer HL2 it will still run it quite happily, but the extra money to get the X800XT is probbaly worth it.....but if the GTO is stretching your budget to the limit then dont worry, its more than adequete to play HL2 and then some....

hope this helps folks....im off out now, its friday night, ta ta

RaverXX, u have the same Bios as me, no need to send....lol

changing the Bios will not help you enable the pipes to 16, yours are actually phsyically limited, not software limited.

runs very stable at 375/1000
good frame rates at 1600x1200
strangely the difference between 201/599 and 375/1000 is only about 2 fps in CS:source video test

hmm...wierd.....those clocks are low, mine was standard at 350/900..........did u buy it from Dell as a GTO? or had you ordered something else like someone did in this thread and get the GTO instead but with lower clocks?

RaverXX......im slightly confused by this guy in the link, 6800GT cards all have 16/6, if they dont then they are not GT's.......they also have GDDR3 RAM at 256Mb, if they dont then they are not GT, that is the standard set by Nvidia.......so on the card he says is a GT but with 12 pipelines, it isnt, its a 6800 or LE with 256Mb GDDR3, bit like the GTO, so its possible the GTO can be altered in the resisters.....but unlikely knowing Dell..
at least thats how i would assume it.....

anyhow, if i am wrong then i apologize...lol, but i think some of what he says is dubious, would also like to know wht sytem he has backing it up to get those scores on 3Dmark03! it must be a pretty hot system!

well, this is just plain scary
ok first of all, like I said my geforce 6800 GTO was severely underclocked when I got it (with my dell dimension 8400)
the first thing that I did was try to enable vertex shaders and the pipelines, I did it but Rivatuner continues to say 12x1, 5vp so I reset it back
I did some overclocking with coolbits and right now im at 405 core 1203 memory, absolutely no artifacting
I also reenabled vertex shaders and pipelines and got a huge bump in 3dmark03 score from 9950 to 11324 even though rivatuner still stills 12x1 5vp
I literally cannot increase my core speed with rivatuner or coolbits, its at max already

so anyone know whats going on? im going to try to increase the memory clock until i see artifacting and then back it off
final settings 405/1208, no artifacting, with even a speck of a snowflake i reduced memory

im wondering why Dell supplied it that slow, thats just not right....their own website lists it as 350/900.......still if you can get it that high thats all well and good

just one thing, have u tried it in an actual game? i noticed in HL2 if i went above what i currently run at (375/1000) i get a lot of sparklies (i guess like snow) in darker moments...but also my heat is well up at this level, i dont like the idea of going any higher on the heat....

i've never used coolbits tho, i cant see it would make any difference to the card whether i use coolbits or rivatuner for the OC part would it?

Got one with my Dimension 8400 last week. Pixel and vertex units hardware locked. The problem I have is with the heat output and lack of cooling for this card. Idle with 23c room temp, I'm getting 42c ambient and 58c core temps. I've seen temp readings climb to 90-100c core and 70-73c ambient under benchmarking and gameplay.

On another note I've benchmarked at 400/1050 (3DMark03) and that's about as high as it would go, although I back it down for normal use to 380/1000, which is about the threshold before artifacts start appearing (Try the Nalu demo from Nvidia, some funny hair artifacts).

Here is my comp stats:
P4 550 3.4GHz
1GB DDR2 533MHz
Nvidia 6800 GTO 12x1, 5vp
160GB 7200 RPM SATA
Audigy 2 ZS

this card does seem to run quite hot bat711.......at stock levels i average 85-90 running HL2 with occasional spikes of 100......OC'd it stays close to 90 on average with HL2, but peaks at 108 (OC to 375/1000 but on 12/5, i found on HL2 the 16/6 setting gave me a bit of snow....strange it doesnt show at all under 3dmark03/05 tho). Idle temps at stock seem to be 60c core and 41 ambient.......the ambient under load (HL2) runs to around 65-70c............

what i dont get is that the cooler on the card looks like the standard GT affair, so should be enough, u should also have a fan inside your case hooked up to the side wall blowing air down onto the PCI slots as well.......there are plenty vents to exhaust the air on the back of the Dell case, the CPU heat is drawn staight out of the case as well......*shrugs*
im gonna grab a X800XT when the new X850's come out and lower the price of the X800's to see how hot it runs in this same box.....

i checked clock rate in both rivatuner and cooolbits, was the same
i ordered 3.2 ghz p4 but they gave me 3.4 ghz
6800 gto
dvd burner + dvd drive
audigy 2 ZS
150 gb HD
1 gig of pc 533 ram
right now im at 400/1.15 there were errors in the text above characters head so i slowed it down in world of warcraft at 1.2

u ordered 3.2 and they gave you 3.4? for the same price? git....lol

mndeg, whats your heat level at those clocks u running at the moment? idle and under load, both core and ambient please.

coo, just realised, my 1st post in this thread, my 100th in this thread, and now my 200th in this thread....i think theres a trend going on here...LOL

Knyghtbyte: first of all, I would like to say thank you for all the info and help u provided. It helped me immensely.

I was just wondering what version of pixel shader and vertex shader settings do you have? I think that the later versions prohibit unmasking but if you force an earlier verison, you may be able to get 16/6. This can be found in Direct 3d tweaks under Shaders (The menu is in driver settings). I overclocked no problem. The core is now at 57c and 45 ambient temperature. I keep on monitoring this and I tell my pc to kill the application if the temperature approaches the core slowdown threshold. I doubt it will be of much help since 135c will bake the hardware but heh...

btw, I do know that for example PS1.4 gives better performance at the expense of quality... i was just wondering if it made a difference to the unmasking the locked units...

yep, dell gave me a 3.4ghz too even though i ordered 3.2. I guess they are short of 3.2s or are feeling generous lol.

Heh, I got an xmas gift from Dell as well, though a different one.

My roommate bought an 8400 a little over a month back (when they were running a promotion for a free 19" flat panel). At the time, all they had was the X300SE, X800SE, and the 6800 GTO. Neither the $330 GTO upgrade nor the $180 X800SE upgrade seemed like a good deal, so he got it with an X300SE and just bought a $170 6600GT.

Later they started offering regular 6800s for $180 instead of X800SEs (although slightly slower than a regular 6800, 325/600 instead of 325/700). That seemed like a perfect match for my new SLI system, so I called Dell up and had them ship a 6800 out for the $180 price it would have cost him, had they offered it at the time.

I was a little confused when I got the card, since it had dual DVI, and no s-video, which was not what I was expecting. Turns out they shipped me a 6800 GTO instead of a 6800. Checked my credit card and I was only billed $180 for it. I'm pretty pleased with that, to say the least. Cripped GT or not, $180 for it is not bad at all. Now if I could only figure out how to get a second one for that price...

Looking forward to see what it'll clock at. Doubt it'll be able to unlock the pipelines, but I'll try it anyway. My A8N-SLI was delayed (3 times even) due to the weather conditions, but it looks like it'll be delivered tomorrow, on Christmas day.

I doubt any shipping service will deliver on Christmas Day unless it's overnight or some really expensive service.

let me know what it clocks at on a single gpu setup first if u can please.....it might only have normal DDR memory, meaning u wont get it over 900 effective.....

Ok, I asked dell about the unusually high core temperatures. They said that the card is supposed to run at 35 degrees.... If that's the case then they really need to check their cooling and check the size of the Dimension 8400 case. Anyways, they said they would send me a replacement 6800 gto and i guess I'll see what kind of performance I get now.. I doubt it will make much of a difference but I dont know how this system passed its burn test... (if there was a burn test conducted lol)
