What's the Hot Monitor Now?

Hey y'all,
I've been out of the loop since Katrina hit and am just getting back online. I was waiting for the end of quater (Oct.) for Dell's pricing to go down on the 2001FP, but didn't make it back online in time. Is the 2001FP still the monitor to be sought after, or has something else taken its place?

Also, is it anticipated that Dell will again slash the price on the 2001FP at quarter's end (Dec.)?

Thanks,
Meph

Thanks, but the 2405 is a bit pricey, plus it's wide screen format.

Price is understandable.. But You say widescreen like its a bad thing..
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, not a bad thing, just not appropriate to my needs, as I run a lot of business apps (although I do watch movies too, but I can live with full screen for that).

Also, that means I have to spend more money on a video card to support the native resolution of the 2005fpw (or the 2001fpw for that matter, given that my 9600xt doesn't support the widescreen res). I've been spending entirely too much money lately...

Thanks,
Meph

Widescreen isn't a bad thing for business apps; it's actually a good thing. You can open multiple documents/pages side by side. And your card does support widescreen, it's just not fast enough for games. And this card still wouldn't be fast for a non-widescreen monitor at the same size. So I'd say the 2005FPW would be a good choice for you. They were selling those for 334$ at Dell.com a while ago, now they're 434$ I believe. But you might find some good deals on eBay.

I'm almost certain that any RADEON card (at least from the 7000 up, maybe even earlier) will support widescreen resolutions without a problem. Now, of course, playing 3D games at 1920x1200 is another question entirely...

I guess my system was hiding unsupported refresh rates for my current monitor. I'm currently running an AIW 9000 (my 9600xt just came back after a warranty replacement and isn't yet installed), so I can't verify at the moment.

But, if I were to go with a wide screen, it would have to be the Dell 2405, although the price is somewhat intimidating at the moment.

I just put my9600XT back in. The resolutions that it supports do not accommodate the resolution of the 2005FPW, which is 1680x1050. The closest it gets is 1600x1200 (at least that is the closest res that it shows on my system via ATI Control Panel, which goes higher res than windows Display Properties list).

Here is a link that allegedly lists all the resolutions that the 9600XT supports.:

http://reviews.cnet.com/ATI_All_In_Wonder_9600_XT/4507-8902_7-30791106.html

Surprisingly, it's top res is stated to be 2048x1536:60. It also states that this is "Max Resolution (External)". Not quite sure what "external" pertains to, but it doesn't seem to support the native resolutions of the 2005FPW or the 2405 FPW, and my understanding is that, with LCDs, one loses image quality when not running at native resolution.

Don't get me wrong, I am considering ways to swing the 2405 (widescreen of the 2005FPW just seems like I'm giving up too much real estate...), which does necessitate a new card, but I can't see the advantage to buying a wide screen monitor and running it with a card that doesn't support the native resolution of the monitor.

Which brings us to a new issue. What reasonably priced card can be recommended that does support the native res of the 2405(1920x1200)? I'm not really much on gaming, although with the magnitude of the 2405, I suppose gaming wouldn't really be out of the question. Viewing DVD movies, however, is something that I would do quite often. Is there a card out there that fits my needs (not the cheapest trash, but I don't feel the need to go top end either...)

Thanks again,
Meph

you have to download custom drivers to set a custom resolution. your video card supports ANY resolution UP TO 2044x1536, including 1680x1050, you just need either a custom driver (like Omega) or a specific resolution hacking application like REFRESH FORCE to set it.

Hi and thanks for the response. So your point is that with modifications, the 9600XT could drive the 2405 at its native resolution? Would there be a performance hit given the specs of the 9600XT? Also, given that the 9600XT I have is an AIW, would these drivers or res hacking utility also accomodate the TV Tuner, or would the TV tuner be unusable under those conditions?

Thanks again,
Meph

the tv tuning questions are good ones and i don't know the answers. as for whether or not your 9600xt is powerful enough to run the 2405fpw in its native resolution, yes, it is. You will also be able to game older 3d games at that resolution without much problems, games like aliens vs predator 2, no one lives forever, etc. here's a link to refresh force: http://www.pagehosting.co.uk/rf/

the way it works is basically it can either auto-scan your graphics card and set the standard resolutions by itself, or you basically just type in the resolution you want in the corresponding fields, along with the refresh rate. for example, 1680 is the WIDTH of your resolution, and 1050 would be your HEIGHT (i may have switched those up, correct me please if I did), so you'd type in those numbers into their fields and then type in the refresh rate in its field (i don't know the 2405fpw's refresh rates, so look it up in its documentation), then you would click apply, reboot and it should show up in your selectable resolutions.

yeah 2405fpw is totally the way to go. If you're new to widescreen, you'll really start to see the advantages of it. I have both a laptop (sony vaio S360) and a monitor (dell 2405) on widescreen and I'm never going back. It feels like you have a lot more space from side to side than up and down, I guess it has to do with your peripheral vision.

Thanks, aweigh. I appreciate the more indepth response. Thanks also for the link. It would be great if, using the RefreshForce utility, the TV tuner would work as well. I suppose I'll just have to give it a try, if & when i pick up the 2405.

The new Viewsonics with the low refresh rate are really nice. I would probably recommend those as well for a standard 19" LCD.
