what's the ideal monitor refresh rate?

The higher the refresh rate the better it will look. If your monitor/video card doesn't support a high rate, your display probably won't show up at all, and I've heard there is a chance you could damage your monitor running at rates it doesn't support, but I've never seen that myself.

These days the lowest that looks good to me is 85hz. I can see 60hz and it is annoying, although I can get used to it after a while. I run at whatever is the best refresh rate I can get at the resolution I am using. I currently run 100hz at 1024x768. If I dropped to 640x480 I could run at 140hz or something real high, but that just isn't enough screen real estate for me.

man...i'm a total moron...
i didn't realize about the refresh rate til now...
i have a hercules kyro 2 and when i went to settings i see it goes all the way to 100
i don't have my monitor manual handy...
i bought it way back in 98, but once i applied the 85 refresh rate it made a big difference..i can't believe it...

i'd say 75-85 is a good rate. anything lower than 70 hurts my eyes.

75Hz is the absolute minimum if you don't want your head to explode
Go 85Hz if you can, no need to go higher though.

PS I use two CTX monitors, a 17 inch and a 19 inch. I've liked CTX for a couple of years now because they're cheap and I can press a button and it will tell me what the refresh rate is. I find that is a helpful feature. All monitors should have that.

I sit in front of my box at work at 85Hz and at home, my screen is at 85hz. When I used to have 75hz at work, I had numerous headaches, but now its gone since I lowered my resolution a bit to get back 85hz. At home, I run 1600x1200 at 85Hz and its quite pleasant to look at. My friend says he's happy at 60hz, but I simply can't stand it.

Your mileage my vary.

Also, I like playing games at 1027x768, I get 120Hz on my monitor for that.

I like 85hz @ 1152x864.

A faster refresh makes you monitor work harder and hotter and I really don't see any difference between 85 and 100. To tell the truth in a blind test I probably couldn't tell the difference between 75 and 85hz but it makes me feel better.

60hz is painfull.

I think you set it at the lowest setting that doesn't flicker. Everyone's eyes are different, some people might see no flicker at 70, while others still see it at 75. My eyes tend to see flicker at much higher rates than my coworkers. Its hard to convince someone that a screen it unreadable if it looks rock solid to them.

The reason I don't just crank it up to the highest setting available is because the picture loses sharpness the higher you go. So its a tradeoff.
