Whats the iPhone 3GS charging secret?

I'm not sure how to word this. It seems that my iPhone 3GS will only charge off of its wall cube that i use at home. I am quite sure it used to charge off of my work computers, a Dell precision 340 running XP and an iMac ~2009 OS X 10.5.8 which also runs Vista OS with boot camp. I don't normally charge here at work so I didn't notice til recently that it won't charge. I thought it was my generic cables. Ive tried three different ones on both setups with no luck. I brought my wall cube from home and I can charge with my Apple wall cube on all of the cables. And my phone can charge with car adapters too. also the computers can see the phone and load photos and work with iTunes on the cables

I am guessing that there was an update at some piont that changed the way a USB port is "seen" by the iPhone. Any ideas what happened?

I'm not sure if this could be the problem, but an issue that I ran into is that sometimes it won't charge via USB because its drawing too much power.

Disconnect any usb devices you may have connected and see if that works.

Just as an addition The older Dell has two 1.1 USB ports in the front of it that I never use. I just tried those and they will charge the iphone.

I did try unplugging my other USB devices and it didn't seem to make a difference

Updated itunes and now the iPhone will not charge off the front ports either. If i set it to not open itunes with phone is connected then it will charge. Very odd
