How? Pop in the Cd, go do something else, come back answer a few questions, if you get to the questions you've pretty much succeded.

Why? I can install my OS of choice in 30 minutes if I take my time (and on slower hardware than that). AND I don't have to spend money on a license to do it.

Who says I paid for the license? I just take a cd and pop it in there, when the 30 day limit is up, format and I'm done.

I'm not gonna sit there and watch it install, I just leave it there and play a game or something.

I was giving you the benefit of the doubt.

How on Earth did you get 512 MB of RAM on a Pentium 133 motherboard? Most systems from around that time couldn't support more than 128 MB of memory.

Why would you downgrade to 2K?

Because I HATE winxp. I installed it on my main rig because 2k doesn't support hyperthreading properly and I just upgraded to a HT cpu. I've been misserable since install XP. Some things are obviously slower. I can't stand it's bloatedness, it's new windows update, new WMP, worthless image viewer, cd burner crap, windows movie maker, windows messenger, activation etc. And of course SP2 adds a bunch of new nagging crap which I have to disable! :| I'm used to my much more powerful apps like Nero and ACDSee. All the crap XP comes with is a complete waste to me. I'll install my 3rd party software dispite M$'s attempt to shove their crap down my throat. Too bad I can't uninstall half of it. I'm looking forward to this XP to crap out on my like my previous XP installs have in the past. It looks like SP2 might take a little longer though. Seems stable dispite it's slowness. But once something happens to cause me to reinstall I'm going back to 2k.

Bloated? Buy a bigger hard drive. They're cheap.
Slower? Maybe at some things.
Don't like the image viewer? Install a different one.
Don't like the burner software? Install Nero.
Don't like the nagging? Set things up the first time and never see it again.

Or, you could install a consumer friendly OS for less than half the price.

hmmm ... slowwest machine I ever installed XP on was a XP2500 ... however, I formatted and installed 2K within a few weeks ...

Now I have installed 2K on a PPro 200 with 64MB of ram before.
It actually runs quite well on a Dual PPRo 200 with 128MB of ram ... and halfway decent on a single PPRo 200 with 96MB of ram.

You're missing the point. And XP is supposed to be a consumer OS. I have plenty of hard drive space but why should I have 2 programs on my computer that do the same thing. Windows should not come with all this crap. I want a basic OS that's stable and supports everything I throw at it. So far the only OS I have found that closely matches that is Win2k.

?
You are haing problems with Windows XP?
?
I think this forums is the right place to start learning instead of complaining...
Me:
P200, 32MB RAM, Windows 2000 (unusable, but it did work...)
Buming RAM to 196 MB did a small miracle and the system was more or less usable...

Not really bloated as hd space goes. A fresh install with SP2 took something like 1.7gigs give or take a 0.1. I've seen a near default linux installs run over 3gigs. (a mandrake I think?)

Slower.. Nope.

n0c's got the last three points nailed..

XP's burner is really just an extra .dll or two. Its not like theres a complete program sitting there. And I think Windows should come with 'this extra crap'. But maybe more control over whats installed and whats not. Not everyone can afford to buy a computer and then get all the software they need on top of it.

As far as stability, its exactly the same in XP as in 2K Pro. As has been said in the past, if you have stability issues with XP or 2K, its due to a third party driver or faulty hardware, not the kernel (since they are essentially the same, except for a few small things like a driver size increase, and HT support in XP).

If 2K works for you fine.

XP Pro works for the majority of others.

I have XP on my current AMD K6-2 300 fileserver. I am thinking of picking up a 500 chip if I come across one.

How do you get around the initial system check? Where XP determines if your hardware meets the minimum requirements? Is there cmd switch?
