Emotional: Holding the hand of a dying one-day old boy, watching him slip away. He was so full of needles, IV's, sensors, that his left hand was the only thing I could hold.
Watching the helpless nurses unhook all IV's, handing him to his sobbing mother, and watching him die peacefully.

I have never experienced anything close to that.

waking up with a stomach ache....going to work for 2 hours barely being able to walk....getting home and asking the rents to take me to the ER....fetal position in the waiting room for 5 hours...get to see the doctor about 12 hours after waking up with pain, and being told me appendix is about to rupture and I need surgery now.

Although the morphine + vicadin was pretty nice for the next couple weeks.

I was working on installing and connecting new Hi-Fi equipment. I was standing with my leg wedged between the "console" and the new sub-woofer. I was bending around the console to bolt the cables to the back of the amp, and lost my balance, falling over backwards.

I immediately passed out, woke up some point later, and tried to stand up. At which time I found out my right leg was a little shorter. I was trying to stand up and failing on a stump of bone about 5 inches below the knee, that was cutting into the muscle and other bodily pieces.

After a bit, I rolled onto my back and went into shock, yelling at the top of my lungs, while having my leg hanging down at a 90 degree angle from the break spot below the knee.

The wife woke up, stepped out into the living room, saw my leg hanging down, and passed out. She hit her head on the table she was beside on the way down. She repeated that 3 times, until the police knocked on the door, and diverted her attention away from me. The next door neighbors had called the police, because they thought someone was dying.

And there is my most painful experience.

hoollyy shittt that sounds nasty. the part about your wife repeated passing out is a bit comedic but if your accident was as gory as it sounded, i wouldn't be surprised. How is your leg now? Did they somehow reattach it?

So it is common to mix emotional pain and physical pain here? Living in the suburbs must be sweet...

My legs feel tingly and numb from reading this thread

Same here. Some of the stuff you guys are describing is way too intense for my mind to even comprehend. The dude that fell in the hot asphalt and his description of the burn treatment...

All of the worst things to happen to me resulted in being knocked out, going into shock, burning through the nerves or getting a bunch of painkillers. Because of that, the worst pain I've ever felt is really something odd. The pain ramped up over the course of maybe 2 hours until it got to the point where it felt like my ribcage had thorns on it and every time I'd breath in my lungs would hit the thorns and cause intense pain to shoot up through my body until my throat itself would start to lock up making it hard to breath. Because the pain would cause my body to lock up and make it difficult to breath, it took a lot of focus to keep myself from what felt like spasming uncontrollably. It hurt to eat, it hurt to breath, it hurt to move, it even hurt to sleep. I found a position where the pain was bearable and stayed in that position for 2 days until the pain finally went away. To this day I have no idea what occurred, all I know is that if I lift my left arm up, I have a group of broken blood vessels visible on the surface of my skin.

I had a pilonidal (sp?) cyst. Basically it's a cyst that forms at the top of your buttcrack.

Well it got infected and it had to be sliced open and the infection drained. Problem is, the shots given didn't "take" and literally I had to sit there and feel somebody slice a scalpel into my highly inflamed/infected flesh. For about 5 seconds it was the most intense pain I ever felt in my life. I literally "saw stars" and almost passed out (I wish I had).

When they removed it (via surgery later on), I had a hole that was literally the size of a golfball, a second bunghole if you will.

Broken shin bone that popped out of the skin about 6 or so inches...

I was in pain for about 20 seconds before I passed out from it (the pain).
