Well i was very excited to buy the intel 320.. that is until i found out about the 8MB bug and therefore i can't buy it. Im going to be leaving the U.S in 2 weeks and therefore i can't afford to have an SSD that will fail on me. Can anyone recommend a decent SSD thats around 120gigs or less that is reliable? Theres so many options i cant seem to find one that i like.

I have a 2010 macbook pro (sata II)

Welcome to the forums!

Intel G2 is known rock-solid if reliability is your first priority.

samsung 470 is good, but we don't know its reliability very well since it does not have long history and has relatively small number of users. G2 on the other side has been around for years, and still we don't see many complaints for early buyers.

thanks for the replies guys! I was considering the samsung 470 but i read some terrible reviews about it on the anandtech main website. The intel G2 is what i want to get but its terribly expensive now since stock is limited.. where can i find one for a decent price?

also what do you guys think of the OWC ssds?

The Intel G2s also had a firmware problem when Intel supported TRIM back in late '09. It bricked a small number of drives, IIRC, if you didn't follow Intel's requirements and instructions that most of us veterans ignore.

Since then however, Intel learned and haven't released firmware updates as much. We're talking only once a year! However I was very surprised earlier this year, when Intel released a new firmware with faster NCQ performance for the G2 which by then was almost 1 1/2 years old.

if they panned it, then yes, it is a terrible review.

Another vote for the Samsung 470, that's why they are extensively used by OEM PC builders.

Performance in the real world is also very good.

samsung 470 is cheaper than intel G2. I do have one samsung 470 SSD in laptop. I like that it comes with its own TRIM software (like G2 does too ) The reason why OEMs would find it attractive is price and good availability - Samsung makes everything in its SSDs. Obviously OCZ and such don't.

x25-m for sure. had 1 failure out of 20+. they advanced swap overnighted me (no cc) a new one. very strange the drive hit a bad sector and cratered (no response). kinda like hard drives. no smart errors to boot. copied everything around the bad sector group and get the replacement. use them in everything macbook, mac pro, 25+ business desktops. everything but servers (waiting for the intel dual ported 2.5" SFF SAS eMLC) - gonna pop 4 of those in a dl380 and 12 900gb 2.5" SAS 10K savvio's to rock some sql as soon as they hit the oem shelves. screw fusion io

+1 for above post. I keep an eye on the OCZ support forums, mainly just for a laugh. It's absolutely shocking whats going on over there.

I would still recommend a 320. From what I have read on the 8MB bug, as long as you power down correctly using the OS shut down system you should not run into this issue. A fix is due in the next few weeks for people who can't shut down properly. Intel claimed that the 320 would be even more reliable than the G2.

It's a SandForce problem, OCZ just seems to receive most of the negative press, probably because they're the largest vendor of SandForce based SSDs. It also doesn't help that OCZ has done some shady stuff in the past, such as the silent transition from 3Xnm NAND to 25nm, which certainly didn't win them any brownie points among hardware enthusiasts. Anyway SandForce controllers are great when they actually work (FWIW I've been using a Vertex 2 for about 10 months and never had a single problem), but unfortunately they have firmware issues galore that cause problems on many systems.

If anything OCZ is probably one of the better SandForce vendors. Because OCZ is their biggest partner, I think they tend to get priority when it comes to firmware updates, bug fixes, that kind of stuff. Then again other partners like Corsair probably tend to have better customer service, so they both have their pros and cons.

Is OCZ really the issue? Or is it the sandforce controllers in general?

As a new owner of a Vertex 3, I've spent some quality time lurking in their forums and I'm definitely left with the impression that OCZ leaves it to their customer base to be their beta-testers.

OCZ might have the most active firmware program of all the sandforce vendors but it comes at a price, and OCZ seems to heavily rely on its customer base to shoulder the burden of paying that price.

The only experience I can equate this to is that of the early days of Nvidia's initial 680i chipset release in which it was just an utter crapshoot of bios revs in determining whether or not your kentsfield quadcore chip was going to work with memory timings xyz and so on.

OCZ gets an A+ from me in terms of effort to do right by the consumer, but as an OCZ consumer you have to realize that OCZ is intending on you becoming a volunteer beta-tester for their benefit as well. So long as you recognize this symbiotic relationship exists when you buy your OCZ drive then your expectations will be met.

If you are more expecting to have a solid, less likely to have firmware issues than otherwise, experience then you need to go with Intel, accept the lowered performance at the same cost, and be happy to have a product that was thoroughly debugged in-house before being brought to the market.

Just my 2-cents as a G2 and a V3 owner.

OK, made an RMA directly with OCZ. If they dont take care of me I will try Amazon.
Oh, and I ordered a 3TB drive for bulk storage. Will be using my two 1TB drives in RAID as the OS and app drive. No more SSD for me. Gonna wait a year.

I really don't know the failure rates, but I recently got a couple of 120 gb Crucial M4's. I thought I had some issues initially with their speed (turned out it was not an issue with the drives) - but I spent some time on their forums. If forum activity is any indicator of users having problems - they seem to get far less traffic than some of the other SSD forums.

I have had 4 intel drives, 2 Vertex 2's, 2 Kingston V100+ drives as well as the Crucials. No problems with any yet so far - I have had the Intels for around 19 months, the Vertex 2's for over a year. Just got the Kingstons and M4's a couple of months ago.

Edit - just saw that you have a mac- some of the issues that I had noticed on the Crucial forums were from mac users, I think the new firmware fixed that but not certain. You might want to check that out if you are considering the M4's. I believe that the Kingston V100+ drives are frequently considered by mac users because of their reliability and aggressive garbage collection for systems without trim. Not quite as fast at some benchmarks as some of the other drives, but in real life it is not noticeable to me.
