LOL groberts is right...the owc drives are not immune. I know because I have had 3 bsods already this weekend...and one time when several tabs on google chrome were open I got a ioerror status. This system is not overclocked or anything at all so I'm sure this is the issue. I don't know of anything right now though to be done about it, I think most of us with these controllers or drives are stuck for the time being...

Of course sandforce webpage has a big disclaimer that says they are looking into the fact that alot of these cases may be cables, or drive controllers and not the fault of their drives typical passing the buck. It is really sad to me that ssd has been out so many years and is still so buggy. The speed is awesome, but if you are rebooting all the time it's hardly productive. The fact that even the new intel drives have bugs and issues really says it all. For now I love the speed and will live with the bugs but for a mission critical or work system I would think long and hard before using a ssd.

People must remember that those not having issues are quietly enjoying their drives; which is most users. The people that are having issues are letting everyone know about it. Though it's quite clear SF based drives are more prone to problems. As for Intel, well it's Intel. They make mistakes too, but at least are fairly quick to solve them.

I've got my first SSD's on the way. A 128GB M4 and 96GB V+100. Neither are SF based so I'm not really worried. Actually I'm pretty psyched.

You are going to love having those SSD's. Once you have one it is nearly torture to use a computer without one.

How are you enjoying that Asus board by the way, I just sent back a GA Z68X-UD4, which I believe was the same board you were having the boot loop issues with.

If your running older SATA 3Gbit/s, then my vote is for the Samsung 470's.

Newer SATA 6Gbit/s - maybe the Crucial m4's?

Intel and Samsung get my vote - I've installed 5 Intel SSDs over the last 1.5 years without any issues. Due to pricing, though, the last SSD I bought was a Samgsung 470 - it's been great so far. Samsung also has a nice toolbox application to performa manual TRIM i important since I'm using in my work computer, still on XP. I'm not sure why Samsung would have gotten bad reviews - they seem quite fast in real-life use.

I haven't seen a bad review at all on the Samsung, most are quite favorable. Unfortunately Anandtech and some of the other major review sites totally glossed over these drives. Hopefully they will give some air time to the new SATA III drives that are set to arrive soon.

Have a Pre-nandgate Vertex 2 120GB in my sig rig (1.5 years) and Agility 2 60GB (7 months) in my laptop and both have been working fine since I got them. The Agility 2 was actually someone else's primary drive for a good long while before I even got to it and its still doing the trick in an old Turion laptop of mine.

Never had a single issue with either drive.

Knock on wood I guess I have a Vertex 2 120gb from last July and it's working great with no issues.

I also wondered why there isn't much out there for reviews on the Samsung 470 series. My OS hdd died in my desktop so I'm finally going to make the jump to a 120/128GB ssd and was eyeing up the Sammy. I'm running on a couple year old DFI board that only supports Sata 2 so lack of Sata 3 support on the 470 isn't an issue for me, and the prices on em atm are pretty attractive. Been very happy with other Samsung products I own (my 22" LCD monitor and plasma TV mainly) so I think I've made up my mind.

I hadn't even planned on getting the V+100 but the newegg shellshocker got me. I have XP and WIn7 on the same machine. Figured with Kingston's aggressive GC I'd put XP on it and be done with HDD's (except for storage). Plus I'll have extra storage for installing games should I need it.

Yup, that's the board I had with boot loop. I'm very pleased with this ASUS, I don't have any serious complaints. Plus I got it for $150 open box from newegg and it came with all accessories! Packaging was rather pathetic, but hey if it works it works. The one thing I really love is their FAN Xpert tool that gives you control over your CPU & chassis fans allowing you to adjust their power (RPM's) based on temperature. My CPU fan can get pretty loud, but I can cap it at any level I want. Same with my chassis fans, they're really quiet even at full speed, but I can make them virtually silent when my system is idle.

I saw the Samsung SSDs mentioned in this thread and decided to research further. There are quite a few very positive reviews on them! No idea why Anandtech has ignored them so far.

The drives fall squarely in the middle of the majority of benchmarks. They are made of 100% Samsung parts (the memory as well as the controller chip). No mentions so far of any bugs like the SF controller SSDs (and Intel to an extent) have. Now, I'm sure there'll be something wrong, but so far, so good.

I decided to take the plunge and go with something different; I got a 128GB version of the Samsung 470 for $199.00.

It even comes with Ghost 15 which I'll make good use of. I should get it in a couple of days. Now I just have to decide if I will do a clean install or image my current system drive to it. I'll probably try the latter first after making a backup, of course.

The Samsung drives area really good, you'll be happy with it.

The only negative I've read about them is that the firmware update process is pretty convoluted. But this may have been fixed, it's been a while since I've looked through NewEgg reviews for the 470s.

Thanks, frostedflakes; I hope so. It's my first SSD; I'm hoping it lasts a good long time and I have no probs with it. Supposedly it comes with some Samsung software that does FW updates/flashes through Windows, though Samsung hasn't released any new FW for their drives (from what I've read). I'm not used to updating FW on HDs anyway. If it's working great, I don't mess with it.

I went with the same Sammy 470 128gb for $199. I'll be doing a clean install since my old OS drive (hdd) died. Should be here Wednesday hopefully.

I'm running the Intel 320 series 120Gb and I can say that it is a decent difference in speed.
Owkay, there are much faster ssd's these days, but for me the "data protection" was the reason to buy this one.
I'm waiting for Intel to put faster disks on the market who have that same protection.

That's when mine is supposed to arrive as well, though I doubt I'll have enough time this week to get it swapped in. I'm going to have to back everything up first before I do anything.

also a firmware fixing the 8Mb should be available within 2 weeks, according to latest Intel news.

Well looks like it won't be delivered til Thursday now. I'll be installing it right away though, will post up if I encounter any issues etc.

I had the OCz turbo and spent hours on that thing, worked great for a little while really fast but after a few months it would crash OS and have to clear drive and do fresh install, i sent it in for rma got a replacement and sold it. have not gone back to ssd since. Thinking bout that Samsung for my lappy though.

*sigh* So many horror stories w/SSDs, no matter the brand, capacity, date of manufacture, etc. I bought one against my better judgement. I.E. The Inner Geek won out. Fricking thing better not crash, die or even hiccup the wrong way, EVER. I'm not an "early adpoter." HOW LONG have SSDs been out? Right. And this is my first one. Darn thing better just work and be awful speedy about it.

So for a C2D MacBook Pro, you'd recommend Kingston, Crucial, and Intel, and maybe Samsung?

I'll stay clear of Sandforce-based units. It's not my primary machine, but still, any crash would be a major PITA.

It appears all of the mentioned Samsung SSD's are Sata II drives while the Crucial M4's (at the same Newegg price) are rated SATA III. Will there be a performance difference here?

Lots of positive reviews on the Crucials. How do they compare to the Samsungs on performance and reliability?
