Hi guys,

I am addicted to these forums.. and I wanted to contribute maybe an interesting thread..
In 1997, I bought a View Sonic PT775 CRT at around $750 bucks and in 2001, I bought a Sony SDM-N80 LCD for $1400 ( I cringe now I think of it!).. For what you can get these days, I now feel a little ripped off; but I guess at the time it was pretty awesome.. Its cool to see the best of the best in the past and see how they stand up to todays standards (not to say that my stuff was the best of the best ) What old crap do you own?

I don't know the exact specs, but my step dad bought an 18inch TFT a looong time ago, back when TFTs were kind of new. Eizo or something is the make?

That was I believe about £2,500. :S

He's got a cheap old 2405 now though

Interestingly, it takes the native resolution thing to a whole new level. If you run it at 1024x768 say, you get that res, in the center of the screen, with white around the edges. No clever resizing going on here. Can be gay though when game menu screens only run at 1024 and you can't resize it (rainbow 6 lockdown, prime example)

Samsung 213T
21.3" LCD
1600x1200 over DVI-I or HD15 analog
16.7m colors (8 bits per channel)
I purchased it in June of last year for US$550 after $100 rebate from Newegg.com; it's still in use, and will most likely remain so until it dies or until I graduate and get a good job, whichever comes first.

i spent $600 on a used planar pl201-bk like 2-3 years ago. it was 20.1 inch , dvi/analog , 500:1 contrast , 25ms refresh.

the colors were not quite as nice as my current monitor, but it was very large . i'm currently using an nec lcd1770gx-bk that i bought on ebay 4 months used for $230 shipped!

About $1800 for a 21" CRT (Nokia 445x, I think). Don't know the specs, but at the time, that was near top of the line. And if I get excess cash and no good uses for it, I might spend whatever the going cost is for a 30" LCD.

$1500 for a 21" seiko with a sony tube. big pixels, .31 mm. looked at about 30 monitors, including side by side with a sony 21". the seiko was more perfect. the way the math worked out, the a row of pixels was exactly .010 inches wide, 1024 x 768 resolution, not one pixel out of place.

the seiko was clearer than the same size sony's. the nanao t560i, which got all the rave reviews, the bottom row of pixels was a partial row.

i wanted something you could use to expose circuit board artwork (taping proto. board to the screen).

anyway, that was my CAD monitor for about 10 years. eventually it got "washed out", the colors weren't as bright or something. gave it to the good will. heavy mother.

$650 on a 21" Sony G520P CRT a few years ago (max resolution 2048 x 1536 @ 85hz,ran it at 1600x1200@100hz desktop) , My current 24" Sony FW900 CRT (Max res 2304x1440 @ 80hz, run it at 1920x1200@98hz desktop) retailed for $2,300 but I was able to get it for $400 off Ebay. Buying off Ebay was a gamble but I was fortunate to recieve an FW900 in excellent condition wich happens to have the best geometry / convergence / focus that ive witnessed on a CRT. It wont be going anywhere until it quits working

$800 for my 2405 when they first came out, though I sold my 2001FP for $450 which only cost me about $300 to begin with.

So it was a no brainer to get it IMO.

My current one was $650 and is possibly the best computer purchase I've made to date. I think that old 13" NEC one my dad got in 1990 was quite a bit more though.

That I can't remember.

The LEAST I've ever paid for good monitors however is 1 euro (USD 1.20) for ten (ten!) old, but hardly ever used 20" Trinitron CAD workstation monitors.

Staring at two of them right now

$450 for ViewSonic VP930b/Samsung 710T (~same price). Soon probably $600 by the time I get to buying the NEC 20" widescreen (*drool*). Cheapest I've used was a bargain bin eMachines shadow mask flat 17" CRT monitor for $99. Yes, I know, eMachines, but that was my dad's decision. (It probably uses the same tube as another competent brand anyway). It's actually quite good, but it's losing its focus and is due for adjustments. Still better than the $200 I thought was bargain for other KDS CRTs. My dad probably spent $500 or more on a Trinitron but he had returned it because he didn't like the lines.

The first ancient NEC MultiSync CRT given to me probably cost even higher than $500, but I'm just guessing at this point. That thing was pretty much a POS (well for this day and age at least), and it even had a dead pixel somehow.

I believe the NEC was a 15" and went up to 1024x768. The eMachines goes to 1280x1024@60 Hz vertical max. VP930b is 1280x1024@~77 Hz vertical max and the Samsung 710T was the same. The two KDS CRTs are 1280x1024@60 Hz vertical max.

A 15" Apple Studio Display LCD for like 1000$ or so when they first came out, can't remember the exact figure, I still use that monitor a lot and guess what, it still holds up a decent monitor, so really, 1000$ for a 6 years investment and more comes out to about 180$ or so per year and thats not counting the few more years or so I plan to use it, so I don't feel ripped off or like I payed an obscene amount for it.

Its funny; people used to pay 500 or more for their monitors.. and 300 or less for their video cards.. while its the total opposite today.. people complain about paying too much for their monitors but are willing to shell out 500-600 bucks for a video card..
