The military was developing a automatic shotgun. Never know when you will be surrounded. There was a guy on one of the schwartzeneger movies who used a gatling gun.

If there was a scenario like depicted in those zombie movies you might as well get bitten and get it over with. Who wants to live in fear? Isn't locking your door at night and having a gun bad enough already?

On the bright side, the many nerds and geeks that never would get "any" could let a female zombie have its way with them. If you die, might as well die laughing!

I like the idea of an aluminum bat, although the lack of any sort of spikes or edges make me question its power. Then again, bats are lightweight and well balanced, so you can wind up for a nice powerful swing.

Ranged weapons are ammo-limited, no matter what kind of ammo you use (even .22LR). Still invaluable in the event of a zombie apocalypse, but you'd have to use them sparingly and probably more for hunting and defense against crazed gun-equipped humans than against zombies.

Maybe a spear or poleaxe would be nice, if you could find one and use it effectively. Plenty of length so you don't have to get too close, and they have bladed edges.

a baseball bat can be good, but I don't think it would be ideal simply because you would need to swing it pretty hard to take out a zombie. Skulls are pretty durable after all. It would be fine if the Zombies came one at a time, but you'd get overwhelmed pretty easily with a bat IMO. That said, they sure as hell are durable, and while not exactly super light, they aren't as heavy or hard to wield as an Axe.

I think a Katana would be the overall best for close combat, or a Machete if they get really close and swarm...

It's true that you have to sharpen a Katana, but, even a dull Katana should still work well, and should be light enough to wield with relative ease.

That said, my personal choice for what I would choose to carry would be a fiskars 23 and 1/2 inch splitting axe. Not perfectly ideal for most since it is a bit unwieldy for 1 handed operation, but it's manageable. It would be VERY effective for splitting zombie heads, and could be used as a hammer and as an axe for building stuff too ...

I would of also carry a large crowbar as well, since it could be swung faster at closer range as a "backup weapon" and it too is very useful as a tool.

Now, I would also carry my 357 magnum for close range, but that would be only used for emergencies ... or cases where I don't have room to swing an axe or crowbar.

True, but with spikes you will make more of a mess.

Of course, and for a long range weapon a gun is the way to go, that's why for this thread I went with close combat.

True, but you'd need a metal one for longevity.

You guys are all idiots. Do you realize how hard it is to swing a pole-axe? Even a strong male who is very fit would tire out quickly in swinging one, and I doubt the people on here are strong and fit. You would tire out after about 2-3 zombies and then you're fucked.

Best thing would probably be an incendiary or chemical weapon that can keep burning flesh after it's discharged, for maximum damage. Like a flamethrower hacked to throw streams of napalm.

Geneva convention doesn't apply to the undead!

I'd think a .22 semiauto rifle would be a better choice, depending on the type of zombie. It's by far the most common type of ammunition, you can carry WAY more of it inside a set weight/volume limit, and stopping power doesn't matter assuming the zombies you're going up against shrug off anything that isn't a headshot. Plus it's quieter.

My next goal is a belt fed 22lr ar15.

Absolutely awful idea, you fire your flamethrower at a pissed off zombie, then you've got a pissed off zombie coming at you... on fire.

bat is good for protection, but not sure how good at killing zombies it would be. can you crack the skull in one swing? some sort of spear may actually be good, depending on your skill with it. pierce eyesocket from a distance. machete or sword could work, esp if you had the strength to decapitate in one swing.

does not eliminate the need for a gun. .22 LR is probably best. accurate, cheap ammo. another factor is - are you immune from virus? then close combat becomes more viable. if you really cant come in contact with the infected, then that is much riskier and you may just need to stick to ranged weapons.

back to CC, an axe or crowbar may be more utilitarian than a bat. if you are on the move, will likely need to be cutting things and breaking into places. crowbar may need some modifications to be more ergonomic. both of these will be more available than a good spear or sword.

i would also consider a flail. semi ranged CC weapon capable of extreme head damage, but probably would need to practice. something like a scythe may also be effective at CC decapitation. also need to consider crowd control. zombies are likely to travel in groups because they will constantly be drawn to each other common stimuli. ex. loud disturbance attracks all the zombies within earshot. now they are grouped and will respond to future stimuli equally as well. this risk dissipates the further you get from populated areas.

large crowbar FTW, small crowbar as back up if I drop the large one temporarily, or if it gets stuck in a zombie.. always have a backup plan, and know your escape routes

OK serious answer, assuming they're the modern "virus" zombies.

You need to minimize blood spatter or you risk getting infected yourself. To me that says blunt weapon. Also they have less tendency to stick in corpses than a blade.

You also want to keep those fuckers away since they're going to grab you.

Has to be simple to use since we're not trained in this stuff.

Longevity: Forever, really can't see a steel mace breaking when beating zombies.
Effectiveness: Very.
Portability: Nope, belt loop.
Messiness: Minimal, for a melee weapon.
Subtlety: Zombie skull crunching noises may or may not be loud, I dunno.
Utility: Can be used as a hammer or to smash doors / walls.

Handily acquired equivalents:

Baseball bat - not optimized for causing bodily harm.
Sledgehammer - not balanced for swinging rapidly.
Normal hammer / other similar tools - poor reach.

Runner-up:

Quarterstaff. Ridiculously effective in the hands of a trained user.

according to world war z:

ideally a shaolin spade: long enough to provide distance but short enough to be wiedly. Sharp enough to decapitate.

more common: steel/titanium crowbar: light and very durable, able to crush skulls and provide utility as a crowbar

An axe. Nothing fancy, just a standard axe you could get at any hardware store.

Longevity: 8/10 Requires occasional sharpening, but doesn't need to be razor sharp to work.
Effectiveness: 9/10 Can decapitate with the blade or crush skulls with the back of the head.
Portability: 6/10 Doable, but somewhat heavy
Messiness: 7/10 No more than other weapons
Subtlety: 9/10 Can be pretty silent depending on how you use it
Utility: 10/10. Can split wood, bash doors open, any number of uses. It's a freaking axe.

Some sort of mace, blunt good weight and easy to use. Or normal axe like you have around your house.

Or if you are badass laser whip lol

you need to dual-wield two of the one-handed versions.
