That zombie guide book recommends one of those climbing ice picks for easy puncturing and retrieval through skulls.

Light weight, durable and efficient.

Or you could avoid the whole encounter by wearing your ghoul mask ala Fallout 3. Just beware friendly fire from any humans you may encounter.

Im just gonna put this here and let you decide:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Th71nkLc0Z4

That said, you can accurately fire a good bow at about 45 rounds a minute even while moving...thats allot of dead zombies fast. Lets say you only get half that since you want headshots...your still taking out zombies as fast or faster than a blunt weapon while using less energy and staying much farther away. With the right design you can handle close encounters and/or safely retreive your bolts/arrows.

Ive seen a pistol grip type repeating crossbow with a bayonet mount (slot between grip and bow with a two screw clamping device), sticking out the front kinda like this:

using a compund mechanism and pull handle with about 20 bolts gravity fed weighed about 5-6lbs. Its was a simpler compound bow kinda like this:

maybe 50 lbs draw not entirely sure the firing weight (is it double?) The hand grip was almost on the front which gave you much better control with the bayonet (like a 24" double edged knife, easy to slash/stab with) and a longer pull on the string. It didnt have a locking or trigger mechanism, you basically pulled back and rested your palm on the back to hold it and control the bow.

Theres quite a few variations that will work. Ive seen more ordinary bows with front guards/blades as well for clubbing/slashing (essentially a bow built onto the grip of a sword/mace)

Decided to try to draw something like Ive seen (man paint is hard even with just 2K dpi):

Suppressed .22lr handgun FTW. I can carry a thousand rounds in two cargo pockets, it'll be relatively quiet, and have a much higher rate of fire.

Double bladed staff.

Not a lot of utility, but if you're properly trained it would be unmatched in close quarter combat against slow moving foes.

RX-78 V Project Gundam.

Longevity: 9/10, nuclear powered core provides almost limitless power, beam saber and beam rifle power renewable from the same source. Potentially light wear and tear with use.
Effectiveness: 10/10, Can destroy gigantic swarms of zombies instantly, with either a single stroke of beam saber or at a safe distance with beam rifle.
Portability: 10/10, Boosters allow it to travel faster than any car or helicopter.
Messiness: 1/10, It will grind the whole damn city into dust in hardly a blink, potentially destroying valuable food stuffs.
Subtlety: -100/10, Jesus Christ.

Spear

No ammo and you can fight zombies at a greater range than most other melee weapons. A stab in the eye is pretty much a one hit kill and a hard hit somewhere else on the head still has a good chance of breaking through the skull.

Way underused in zombie movies imo.

5 foot range, only 3 lbs...could dual weild. A pick is perfect for puncturing zombie brains. Shouldn't make much mess at all.

Or something like this with longer side spikes...so you could swing or stab as needed. Itd be lightweight easy to use (even dual weild) have a good reach and not make to much mess.

Lightweight Machete, ~18'' blade.

Longevity: No ammo needed. Slice and dice until the blade dulls, sharpen it, and keep on truckin'.
Effectiveness:It's good enough for clearing paths through the woods... and in this case, clearing a path through zombies.
Portability: Very portable. You could probably carry two so you always have a backup.
Messiness: Fairy messy. Might want to wear some face protection.
Subtlety: Nice and quiet. I don't imagine that blades make too much noise when going through a zombie's neck.
Utility: Not incredibly versatile, but you can use it to chop wood and probably get through some weaker doors.

Silver Sword
Damage: 9 | Weight: 7 | Value:100
"Especially effective against undead"

Longevity: If it's made of sterling silver, it should be quite durable
Effectiveness: It's especially effective against undead
Portability: Much lighter than the silver broadsword, can be swung faster
Messiness: It's a sword, there will be some splatter
Subtlety: Silent but deadly, and shiny
Utility: It can cut stuff

Sterling silver is mostly silver with a little bit of copper. That may be sturdy enough for a tray, cup, or candlestick, but not for a weapon.
