<< Anyone here use the old 8" floppies? >>

Yep, my dad still has a big old stack of them sitting around. No way to read them anymore, tho.

My first IBM PC didn't even have a hard disk. Just two full-height 5 1/4" floppy drives. After that I was using an IBM XT with a full height floppy and a full height 5 1/4" 10 megabyte hard disk. After that, the hard disk was replaced so I could add a 720k floppy drive and a 20 meg MFM Connor.

A 20MB hard drive on an old Mac II+. Have you ever seen this machine? It's about twice as wide as a normal desktop machine. I mean, the thing could have two monitors sitting on top of it without any problem!! I think it had like 8 or 9 expansion slots or something. Here's a drawing for you visual people:

*my* first hard drive was about 100 megs. Earlier, we had one that was less than 10, but I don't remember the exact size.

ahh, well we cannot count my time running the old 8086 that had no hard drive, so we must go forward to the times when I had computers that had hard drives...
I was probably in Jr. High and my father got himself a new 386/20 I believe and handed me down his 386/16 (i think). As far as I can recall that had a 40MB drive, and that, compared to those 720kb 5.25" was heaven in a box.

Wow, that brings back memories! I'd completely forgotten about that one.

Anyone else remember when you could buy a big thick magazine that would have games in there in code on the pages? You would type in all the code from 50 or more pages into your computer, save the file to the floppy or casette recorder, and then you could play it. Of course, the odds of you actually typing 50 pages of code into the system without a single typo are virtually non-existent, so you'd always end up with some program that would start and about 5 minutes later go "Beep. Syntax Error in 548". Aaaaaaargh! :|

Anyone remember the game "jumpjet"?? That was a great one too!

i used a 8086 with dual floppies, that was a big deal at the time. The first real hard drive I used was much later, a 124 meg job on a 386.

I think it was a 30MB harddrive on a 386....

I still have a 500MB on a P75, and the largest harddrive I have is only 6.4GB
