22 would probably be more than enough but if you want to be sure, nuke it out of orbit. It's the only way.

Of course that close I want it to die and not get pissed and charge me! Sounds silly and I know it's not a boar but those little buggers can be quite mean.

A 30-30 bullet will drop somewhere around 80"(that is 61/2 feet) at 450 yards. You would be lucky if you could hit a car let alone a groundhog.
My point! Just because a bullet is 30 caliber that has no bearing on it's long range potential.
A 30-30 is a 200 yd. gun.

8 gauge double barrel shotgun.

if that's not effective: BFG9000

I would just use whatever a mauser uses as I have access to one. I think it is an 8mm Rifle Cartridge?

.22 with a 50 round banana clip. That way if you miss with the first shot you have 49 more. Ruger 10/22 FTW!

do you want to eat it, or ensure max carnage? I enjoy the recommendation of a .50cal to the face. No more groundhog exists, evidence is scattered everywhere but where it stood.

22-250... the best varmint round evar!

A 22LR will work too.
I have shot them and had them twist around on the ground for a minute.
You might have to plug them a second or third time to put them out of their misery.

Seconded. The 22-250 has a very flat trajectory making it accurate and powerful to much further distances, but is a lot more costly than a .22 rifle. A .22 to the head will be deadly but anything else and it suffers.

When I started out, I used my .270. It worked fine but was definitely overkill. I bought a .220 swift and thats a perfect gun for reaching out long distance. a .22 would work although your range won't be much over 100 yards.

Saw his shadow. Sumbish gotta die now. I hate winter.

.22 Magnum is my alltime favorite caliber. The biggest game I've ever taken down with it was a fox.

.17 HMR or a .22

If you really feel the need for destruction, .22 Mag

30/30 would be a waste of money. Tell your brother he needs to educate himself on firearms.
