VeggieFrog was required to read fahrenheit 451 for school in high school.... english and lit are her strong points, so when she struggled, I had to take her word that the book sucked.

I read it... it was torture. I dont know how she finished it.

Worst book EVER!!

seconded.

Edit: on second thought Scarlet leter wasn't that bad, I just skipped big chunks of it and had no idea what was happening.

New worst: Paul Johnsons "modern times"

i think that a lot of you have a lingering anger over school assignments. almost all of these books you've rated horribly are books that i've had to read for high school projects or essays.

No kidding. Almost all of the ones stated so far are in any high school curriculum... and a lot of these are really great books. Catch-22? Heart of Darkness? Portrait of an Artist? Scarlet Letter? Great Expectations? WTF is wrong with you people? Do you think Playboy and Maxim are the epitome of great reading material or something?

You can't "read" pictures, dork.

Do they publish a Braille version of Playboy?

If movies haven't lied to me (and when have they ever lied to me?), YES! (Sneakers)

Worst book I've ever read... The Scarlet Letter

Probably Huckleberry Fin. At no point in that book was I even slightly entertained, enlightened, or inspired. That book is a failure and I hated having to be forced-read it.

I totally agree. I couldnt stand how he tried to write out the dialect of some of the characters. This is the type of book where cliff notes really shine.

Oh God. I forgot about Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer... had to read those in a grad class a year or so ago...
In lecture following our reading, we all sat there with blank looks on our face when the prof asked "what was the author doing when he had Tom Sawyer whitewashing the fence?" Huh??! He was probably sitting at his desk drinking lemonade or something when he wrote that.

"no, what what was Mark Twain realllllllllllly doing? No idea? I'll tell you. What Mark Twain was realllly doing was whitewashing southern society's view of slavery."

Yup, that class sucked.

But yeah, Conrad SUCKS. Hard. Heart of Darkness was bad, but if you want to read an even worse one by him, read Secret Sharer

I've recently bought 2 books based on online reviews that have turned out unreadable.

"Survivor" by CHUCK PALAHNIUK, and "Vurt" by Jeff Noon. I don't understand how people could consider styles anything other than absent. Neither one could write a metaphor to save their life.

He's basically writing a story through the eyes of an extremely disfunctional family. One's mentally retarded, one is crazy, and one is a bastage. The crazy brother is the section of the novel that gets hard to understand because there's no punctuation!!!

I supposedly read that three years ago, but I remember absolutely nothing about it. I guess it's probably better that way.

I actually did a 5 pg essay on it in high school and I don't think I read a word of it. Thank you, cliff's notes!

Id agree too..but I didnt read it. More like..skimmed it.

I agree wholeheartedly, and I only took the test on it. In fact, NOBODY in my class so much as did more than glance at the cover. EVEN THE OVERNERD BOOKWORM NERD GIRL DIDN'T READ IT. Not one of us even took the effort to do the Cliffnotes or Sparknotes thing. Usually before one of those stupid tests, one person is telling the entire class what happened while the teacher is out of the room getting the scantrons - but this time we were all sitting around looking utterly dumbfounded. The beauty of it? The curve on this particular test was preset so that 25/50 or greater is a grade of 100%. This meant that statistically, you'd pass with a C.
