What's this green, greasy ooze on my rim

it's all over my front left wheel, on the spokes, but more so on the inside/back of the rim.
it's kind of thick, and green when i smudge it.
it appears to be coming from the rotor or brakes.

uh oh, probably a leak... better check my brake fluid.

car is 1995 sentra with 60,000 miles on it, though that mileage is suspect since it's so low for a relatively old car (bought used).

Did you just have them mounted? It might just be the lube used for peeling the tires on and off the rims.

yeah, that's what i thought.
brake fluid is clear and liquidy.
checked the brake fluid levels anyway and they are fine.

this discharge is very dark green (appears black until i smudge it), greasy, and thick.

the rims have been on there for years, so it's not that...
maybe I ran over something since it's only on one of the wheels.
but then again, it was there the last time i washed too... hmm...

I've seen quality, high temperature grease that's green like that. Is that the same color as the grease used on your ball joints and perhaps wheel bearings?

I'm going to agree with Ornery, wheel bearing grease, a ball joint that split or a CV joint is also a possibility.

Crawl under the car and take a look. If it is any of the three get it to a shop, waiting can be more expensive than getting the problem fixed early.

Yea it probably is the CV joint/ball bearings. The grease should be all over the top of your wheel well too from the spinning. Do you hear any clicking on turns in your car? How old is it?

Listen to them about the CV joint deal. They are right, we took one out of my dads truck before and there was green goop everywhere.

Ah yes! There you go. CV grease can be green. Duh! Dude! If it's coming out at a rate where it's on your rims, your outer CV boot can't be looking good.

i think it's the green slime tire sealant.. are you the original owner of the car or did you just buy it from someone used and haven't changed the tire yet? that's what i strongly suspect it is.. and it's probably leaking thru the bead

Yeah, that's what I was going to say. Slime, the tire sealant. I didn't know you could put that stuff in car tires though, I thought it was just for tubed-tires.

If its on the front wheel, I'd check the CV joint. There is a rubber boot where wheel assembly and the drive shaft meets. Is it cracked? Its probably the cause. If not, Squeeze the rubber boot all the way around and feel for any grease oozing out. You should immediately replace the CV joint assembly. You can replace the boots by it self, but its pain in the ass so I recommend buying a remanuafctured CV joint assembly, swapping it then turning in your current assemblies for core credit.

i bought it used 1.5 years ago. 45,000 "suspicious" miles on it.

I noticed the grease a month ago, but thought nothing of it because there wasn't much leakage.

i guess i better go to the mechanic tomorrow morning.
anyone know if it can be repaired quickly?
like if they keep replacement cv boots in stock frequently?
