what's up with ~1500 sq ft houses?

from the heating your house thread, i noticed quite a few people listing sq footage of their houses in the 1300-1700 sq ft range.
that seems incredibly small for a house.

i have a 2 bed apartment that is 1200 sq foot. i can't imagine an entire house being only 100 sq foot larger. that's barely an extra bedroom larger than mine.
can y'all with small houses post a pic of the outside?

3 bedroom 1st house is normally 1300-1700 sq ft.

And posting in a stupid thread. And to slow your brag roll my house is 3000 sq feet and mortgage is 1200, likely less than your rent.

Don't have a pic.

Our house is 1300 square feet, 1000 downstairs and 300 upstairs. But with a house you often also get a basement and garage to use for storage, appartments can be hit or miss with the garage. So the square footage of a house may seem bigger than the same square footage in an apartment.

thats not a bad size for a house. you don't need a ton of room.

Mine is 1750. 3 bedroom, 2 full bath, decent kitchen, dining room, living room, landry-mud room.

Depends...if it's a ranch with a full basement then it's really 3000 sq/ft.
If it's a split level then that's pretty common for a 3BR home. My first house was 1600 sq/ft. It had three bedrooms that were around 11x12 or so in size, two full baths, an "eat in" galley style kitchen, a great room upstairs and a small living room downstairs. Very doable for a family of 3 or 4 really.

But it was a split foyer style and had no real storage available, so that was the biggest downfall.

You obviously haven't been in a 400 or 800 sq ft apts. I have friends that used to share a 2 bdrm 500 sqft apt in Beacon Hill in Boston. I think they paid around $1800/month.

Two bedroom, two bath apt, ~1250 sq ft. $805, probably less than the interest on your mortgage.

Now somebody get in here & post about their $800 mortgage that is tax deductible.

Because that is the size of the house, not the house, garage, driveway, workshop, basement attic, front porch, and most importantly, YARD.

Haha, my parents rent out an apartment in Boston for about that same amount and that same SQFT.

my place is about 1500 sqft of living space, including a partially finished basement, And it doesn't seem small to me except the Living/Dining could be a little more spacious, but I have a huge rec room so its not a big deal.

Kitchen = 160
Living/Dining = 240
BR1 = 135
BR2 = 120
BR3 = 95
BA1 = 35
BA2 = 35
Den = 130
Rec = 300
closets, hallways make up the rest.

It was built in 1960.

Do townhouses count? I grew up in a ~1500 sqft townhouse. Main hall, bedroom on right, open living room on left which is connected straight to the dining room and kitchen, then a staircase leading to a small landing with two more bedrooms on each side. Stick two of them together and you have what looks like any suburban cookie cutter house.

My house is ~1600sqf (after addition a few years ago). We don't have a finished basement, but I am working on that... slowly.
here's some pics:

If it helps you any to wrap your brain around it, I pay ~$5200 in taxes and a FMV of ~$235K

There's 4 of us and two cats. Detached 1.5 car garage. Yard is a bit small for my tastes (.14 acres!!!), but everything fits us perfectly fine.

Yup. 1200sq ft apartment with a single window looking out over a parking lot, shared walls, and where as soon as you step out your front door you're in a common area; and 1200 sq ft house with views of open space all around and nobody within 100yards are two different things.

Florida is ripe with these. 1500sq foot 3 br houses. Built mostly in the 70's early 80's by devs looking to capitalize on the building boom. It wasn't until the 90's did they get the idea that folks might want larger homes and started to do stuff that was more than the bare minimum.

Recall that we have no basements, and VERY rarely have second floors. So all we get is a single floor ranch style house on a small lot that is taxed to death.

Also theres a ton of condos and even more townhouses (which tend to be TINY).
