What's up with my CD-RW problem?

I had recently upgraded several core components to my system. That included the mobo, CPU/HSF, RAM, SCSI adapter, SCSI HD.

Prior to my major upgrade, everything on my system worked fine. I was able to burn CDs without a hitch. Yesterday, I picked up a 48x12x48x LiteON CD-RW. After installing it, I was unable to access it. Was it a loose cable? No, I checked everything twice. Was it jumpered correctly with the DVD drive? Yes, the CD-RW is set to master, the DVD was set to slave. They are both on the same ribbon that's plugged into the primary IDE controller (my HD drives are SCSI).

To try and remedy this problem, I updated the mobo BIOS to the lastest release. That didn't fix my problem, so I then attempted to update the firmware for the CD-RW drive. When I got back into Windows, my device manager for the CD-RW drive status read, "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". I then replaced the new drive with my older 12x10x32x LiteON CD-RW. Although I was able to access the drive, I was unable to burn anything with it.

I believe what I need to do next is upgrade my ASPI layer. I think Adaptec has the latest release out, which is 4.71. Can anyone confirm my belief that this may fix my problems, and allow me to upgrade to my new LiteON CD-RW?

Another conflict may be my software that I've got installed. I do have the latest Nero software v5.5 installed. I also have Roxio's Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum installed. I've read somewhere that both software doesn't play nice when installed on the same machine. I'd rather keep Nero, so I may uninstall Easy CD Creator. Does anyone agree that this may be the conflict?

I've considered the following as a solution. To start, I believe that I'll install the latest ASPI update. If that doesn't work, I'll uninstall Easy CD Creator. If that doesn't work, I'll put the drives on seperate controllers. Somewhere, something has to work.

How about the problem that I'm having with my 48x12x48x CD-RW drive? Why would I get the error, "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"? According to TechNet, that error indicates that a different driver is needed. LiteON doesn't provide a driver for their drive, and they suggest that you use the default Windows driver. What's up with that? Well, I guess my first goal is to get the CD burner to work. Once that is accomplished, then I'll worry about trying to get my hardware upgraded.

Thanks in advance,
Josh

Nero definately dosn't like any other burning software on the computer. I would remove Roxio and then see if your problem is solved.

It is true that the nero/adaptec do not get along. Start from there and then try hooking up just the burner by itself on the channel and see what happens.

Great. I'll adjust my approach to my software problem by doing the uninstall of ECDC. I'll posts my results later.

I've uninstalled both burning programs. Afterwards, I installed Nero 5.5, and updated it with the latest patch. That didn't fix my CD burner problem. I then updated ASPI to 4.71. That didn't fix it. The only thing left for me to try is making both CD-RW and DVD drive masters, and placed on seperate IDE controllers. That will have to wait till tomorrow.

If I may be missing something here, and somebody else has a better clue than I do, please speak up.

I found out that I can burn CDs, as long as they're data disks. I couldn't copy a CD from my DVD to my CD-RW drive though. I think I will try making both drives as master, and placed on seperate IDE controllers.

I set both drives as master. Afterwards, I left the CD-RW on the primary IDE. The DVD drive I put onto the secondary IDE. According to the device manager, they are both running properly. However, I still can't copy a CD. What is up???
