What's up with Newegg.com?

So, to order online, I have to create an account and give it my credit card number? I don't think I like the idea of having my credit card number in some database.

Also, when you chose those combo items where you save like $10 if you buy item X with item Y, when do you see the $10 coming off? Towards the end of the checkout process?

Their office is closed and there's no one to ask at this time.

PS. I had the following items in my cart, but then backed out during the checkout process:

$139 - AMD Athlon XP 1600+
$147 - Asus A7M266 AMD 761 Mobo
$151 - Asus V7700 TI Pure 64 MB GeForce2 Video card
$94 - Crucial 512 MB PC2100 DDR RAM
$47 - Enlight EN-72370X3C4 Mid ATX case
$12 - Sunon 108 CFM case fan
$31 - shipping

Total: $621

minus ??? for the combo items.

The Newegg Database is really secure. I wouldn't worry about having your CC number in it.. As for the discounts.. I thought they came off immediatly..

I, and perhaps a few others, would like to know where and what this is based from?

i still dont understand why some people are so paranoid...do you know HOW many transactions are done a day?? and how many frauds are done?? it must be like a million to one ratio.

plus, i dont think im so special where i would get mine taken...heh, crooks would be in for a surprise that there aint much in the account to begin with.

first off, i thought there was an option where they don't store it?

if not,

a.) doubtful it will get taken
b.) even if it does, don't most cc companies not hold you responsible for unauthorized use?

I just checked my account...it has the type of credit card but the card is blank...so you dont have to store it if you dont want to.

First off, I don't think I'm paranoid (they're really after me). And second, I have no doubt that the number of frauds commited to the number of transactions is a small ratio, but it's the one instance of gaining access to the credit card information that makes you jump at anybody who's ever made the statement of "XXX database is secure." Off the top of my head, a couple thousand CC numbers were compromised when Egghead's system was weak, even though they also made the claim of a secure shopping site. Unless you worked for Egghead's IT dept or the database outsourcer (or in this case, Newegg's), I don't think you really have the firsthand knowledge whether the system is really secure or "pretty secure."

There is indeed an option not to store your CC info in their data base. Like you I am not wild about spreading my credit info all over the web, I clicked the do not store box. Hopefully that is what they did.

I know it shows up in the order summary BEFORE you actually confirm and place the order. What I hate about NewEgg is their order status page. It shows all your recent past orders, not just your current one. If my wife ever saw that page I'd be dead!

since you're already spending a lot of money, spend about 30 dollars more and get the Leadtek Geforce 3 ti-200...WAY faster than a geforce 2 GTS and from everything i've heard under the video forum, these babies come with 3.8ns chips. DEFINITELY worth the extra money

Hmm... GeForce3. For about $30 more? That's reasonable. I was trying to stay under $600 and I had to go with the Asus A7V266 mobo. It actually lists "Athlon XP" as one of the compatible processors. The Asus A7M266 only lists Durons and Athlon TBird 1+ GHz.

Maybe I'll go for 256 MB instead of 512 MB. That's something that's easy to upgrade later.

Besides the drives, is there anything else I might be missing? I'm getting the retail CPU, so it already has an adequate fan.

Wow... $94 for 512MB of RAM... did RAM prices go up that much in the last month? It used to be about $60 shipped, right from Crucial.com Sheesh. You shoudl check on that jsut to make sure.

Why not get the Epox 8VHA+ board... the KT266A board. IT is only like $110 or so, and Anand said it was pretty groovy. Why you want the ASUS? You no likey VIA?

Other than that... looks like a yummy system. I agree with the other d00d. Get the GF3 Ti-200. That GF2 is ol' technology.

You're right, Coop.

If I get the Epox mobo that has better reviews, I can get the Leadtek GF3 card instead of a GF2, and come out paying less. And I get to stick with 512 MB of DDR RAM.

I picked the Asus mobo originally because of the combo deal and the RAID 0 capability, but I doubt I'll actually stripe a couple of drives.

Thanks.

If you are paranoid about your credit card number being stolen, why not get an MBNA Visa, American Express Blue, or Discover card? All 3 cards offer some form of "one time use c/c numbers". The basic idea is that when you make a purchase, you logon to your credit card company's web page and you can generate a credit card number thats associated with your credit card. MBNA's SafeShop offers a cap so you can say you only want to allow for $500 worth of purchases total and you want it to expire in XX months (up to 12 months). American Express's Private Payments are one-time use, so after you've use it the one time it can't be used again. I've never used the Discover one, but I would guess that it is similar.

Anyways, if you're ever worried about an e-commerce store storing your credit card number on their site, this would prevent them from getting your real card number.

The discounts come at the last step, when your total is given. It is just before you confirm the total that they show your savings.

The epox 8vha+ is good. Personally, I'm thinking of the Abit KR7, or the gigabyte GA-7VTX-H. The extra 60 bucks on the projected price of the Abit hurts though.

You must jump into the water to test it for yourself. I and many other people on this site have purchaced products from Newegg and have nothing but good things to say about the products and service.

Nothing ventured nothing gained.

BTW you can always dispute a charge with your CC company if you have a problem.

Just my $.02

I just bought some computer stuff from Newegg using 2 different credit cards and a couple days after there were some charges on the cards that I had to dispute. There was a $200 charge for astronaut training on my parents card and a charge for $11 for Prodigy internet service on my card. These charges appeared 2 days after ordering from Newegg. I ordered from only Newegg on my parents card and from Newegg, and Dell on my card so Im thinking it was from the Newegg order. Has anyone else had any thing like this appear on their cards after purchasing from Newegg?

<< $200 charge for astronaut training on my parents card a >>

lol, astronaut training.

I don't know why I thought that was so funny. Who steals a cc# and orders some astronaut training? HAHAHA... oh man, I must be tired, I never laugh. That's so funny to me at the moment though.

btw I've used 3 cc's at newegg since February and haven't had any problems.

Astronaut training!

I've ordered from newegg.com without anything odd showing up.

If someone was going to steal and use your CC number, they'd probably wait at least a few weeks after obtaining it, so as to be discreet and be more likely to get more use out of it.
