I installed RC1 and after boot up and seeing the desktop, there is a LONG delay.. about 20 seconds, and then i hear the welcome login music. How do i get rid of it?

never heard of that happening ... I should have RC1 in the next few days . . . but until then all I can do is offer a bump for a guy in need.

I noticed it as well. The bootup music came long after my screen was there.. and you can't do anything.. clicking start won't do anything for almost 30 seconds.

it was REALLY really bad before I defragged, now it's not so much anymore.. but my hard drive isn't doing anything, so windows xp must really be thinking about something.

i think XP is looking for a dhcp server or something over the network. if you have an installed eth card and nothing is plugged in to it this may be the problem.

bravo scanman, that seems to have been it.

My second nic was set for auto. I don't know why, usually I get to set it early on manually, but I must have forgotten this time around. (no other computers on the network at the moment)

Hi,

I have this problem too and thought it was something to do with what you suggest, but can anyone give me pointers on how to correct it?

What sound cards are you guys running? I see kromaster has a live. Win2k would pause for a few seconds with a sb live in my computer. Hooray for creative drivers. (have since switched to gtxp). I wonder if the same problem exists in WinXP.

My friend UPGRADED from ME.. he also has live. On his ME, he installed the LIVEWARE 3.0 drivers. He doesnt have this problem plus he has the speaker ICON on the tray.. WHICH I DONT HAVE but sound still works... man... could this be a bug in XP... if it is.. hopefully they will fix it on the FINAL release...

jbworrill: Go to control panel, then networks.

I believe it's adapters, then pick the one you want to assign the IP address for. I picked my 1st nic because that's what XP set up as the one I don't use with my cable modem. Right clicked it, went to properties. Then you'll see different protocols there, go to tcp/ip and do properties on that. You'll see some radio buttons there, change Automatic IP detection/DHCP or whatever it is to "Assign IP manually" and change it to something like 192.168.0.1

To test it, reboot and when I did that my startup sound started while it was loading, not 30 seconds after the desktop was there.

Yep, I had the same problem with Windows 2000 looooong time ago, until someone on this forum gave me the tip about manually assigning IP to the NIC.

Currently, I have a RT314 DSL router hooped up, and XP automatically reads IP and login information from the router! I didn't have to do diddly squat. Amazing. Upon installation and first boot into Windows, I was already on internet! Simply amazing. So far, I am liking XP everyday I use it...
