sorry about ranting, i just get upset when i see money wasted

The reason is that you can software mod to 9500 pro. And maybe even 9700. With the software mods it's much safer.

Eh, I just sold a bunch of stuff I had laying around and bought a Radeon 9700 Pro. My total out of pocket cost was only like 40 bucks.

Why did I buy a Radeon 9500.

1. I got the one from ATI i got a 9500 Pro

2. I heard they are as good as the gForce 4 Ti 4600 cards

3. People are buying them because they probably dont have the extra $150-200 to shell out

eh mine was sitting in my mom's comp until recently when she reported it was blanking the screen for a split second every few mins. I was so proud to be one of the first to pick up the tnt back when nobody had heard of nvidia.
gretzky: q3 90fps on tnt?!?!?! how?!?!?!

It's all about the software mod to a 9500 Pro/9700. You can't beat that, and the risk potential seems to be little to none.

Also, it is a fast card for the money. It does a good job, and even allows some FSAA action with anisotropic filtering. It's not a bad card in and of itself, even without the mod being available.

Yep, I have one of those PCI dinosaurs too. It's sitting in my parts box along with my three dialup modems, an ISA sound card and most of my PCI NICs. It was a great card in it's day, but if you want to game, you need to upgrade "just a wee bit."

Geez I feel so stupid for buying an 8500LE in july when I shouldve waited for the 9500.

Well I really needed a vid card especially since I was running 8meg Rage card before.

I'm right on the fence between the Albatron 4200 and the 9500 Pro. Cost difference is a factor, but so are the newer features of the 9500. Main sticking point for me is the high amount of conflicts that i'm hearing with the 9500's causing random crashes. The Albatron is a very nice card and proven; considering that i'll be doing a major upgrade in the next year, may just have to opt for the 4200 and leave it in this system.

I bought a 9500 non-pro from newegg because it was better than my old video card regardless, and I had the chance to possibly get a 9700 pro out of it with the software mod (I never do any hardware mods).

Sure enough, my 9500 worked perfectly... rock solid stable and absolutely no problems whatsoever... core runs at 351 and memory at 297 with stock cooling. 3dmark fillrate tests show that indeed all 8 pipes are working perfectly.

Selling my old card for 65, and the 9500 cost 160, so my out of pocket expense for a 9700 pro is 95. I am happy.

If you have a slower CPU (1.8ghz or less) you should probably get the GF4 Turbo, as it performs better with slower CPUs. The 9700/9500 series scales better with faster CPUs, but you need a fast (2ghz and faster) to take full advantage of it.

As for why people are buying 9500's and hacking them into 9700's? You might as well ask why people OVERCLOCK their CPUs. They can't/don't wanna shell out $300 for a 9700pro, so they are looking for free performance.

One system at home still has a TNT card as well :Q

As for this 90 FPS in quake 3...everything normal, 640 x 480 x 32, I think I got ~40 in every time demo except for nv15 (I think that's what it's called). That one slaughtered my system back in the day.
