What's with the infestation of Skype in multiplayer gaming?

Are these people watching each others faces when they game or just using it for voice comm?

Typically they use it for voice comms from what I understand. I'm personally not a big fan of it myself, far too bloated with unnecessary crap that I don't need. I run my own TS3 server that I use and it's been able to handle 20 simultaneous connections no problem. If all else fails then sometimes I'll use Curse voice. The only reason I use Skype at all is for some podcasts I host & particpate on along with a friend or two that use it for IM.

I like Mumble.

I know TS3 probably has a bigger following, but Mumble is awesome. The voice quality is outstanding.

yup, my friends in other states, other countries, i'll just invite them right over...


if you are playing a game where teamwork is essential, being able to talk, versus type, to determine what you are doing is kind of important.

i would imagine most are using voice chat only for the gaming stuff. it's free, so it is accessible. also, a lot of people may already have skype for chatting with friends and family, so it isnt something new to install.

sure, but in this instance, i think most people are using it to chat in games with people they already know. so that kind of drivel is less likely to happen.

friend and i used skype when playing together. we weren't going to pay for a TS server or something for just the 2 of us to use occasionally.

voice chat is essential in some multiplayer games, like in war thunder when playing with my squad mates.

I disable voice chat in every game I play

Any first person shooters, GTA Online, etc... it gets disabled right away

Not trying to listen to some dorks while I game

I play MMOs, and voice chat greatly improves the teamwork. I use TS3 currently, thoug we used Mumble in the past, heck we use to do 20 man raids on Skype once upon a time. I actually like Skype but it is a bit of a resource hog

That's why I play on a TS with some guys that I've known forever. I don't chat with just anyone. It's a closed TS and only people in our small group can join. We have played many games together over the years.

People use it cause everyone has it, it's easy, and it's free. I've got a 10 man Mumble I use for voice chat with friends. I turn public voice chat off in most games.

I think a lot of people are using it now, because it's included with Windows 8, and the upcoming Windows 10. So it's there by default and easy for people to setup.

New to me, I don't even use a mic. Just get sick of people asking if I have Skype when I want to play a game and then kicking me out when I don't.

I'm 32 years old gaming isn't that serious to me anymore. I play competitive games still like COD but just to have fun. I don't care if I am 1st or 10th on the team in kills/deaths.

These Skypers are taking what should be a casual experience and making it so if you aren't as hardcore as them they kick you out.

Well, yeah, because voice chat with your teammates gives a serious advantage. And a huge drawback if your team doesn't have it while the other side does. So I can't blame people for this response if you don't use it and they want to play competitively.

EDIT: And, btw, I'm 41 here. I used Ventrilo back in my WoW days for boss fights, but those were closed guild-only rooms, not open chat. I can definitely understand not wanting to go open chat with a bunch of today's kids...

What you're probably missing is that most public games are probably like that, being jerks about everything, not just voice chat.

I have never even once joined a public voice chat, through skype or any other, although even 10 years ago when *I* was 32, I've constantly used voice communication with guild/clan mates while playing WoW and other MMOs through Ventrilo or TeamSpeak (and recently, Mumble). It just makes perfect sense and a huge help in coordination when you can simply speak instead of typing.

In sunmary, voice chat is a legitimate tool for online gaming and it has its place, however it's definitely not a new or young thing, and if there are public games out there that require it and kicked you for not having it, you're likely better off.

I seldom play multiplayer games, but when I do I use Skype. It's so much simpler than using Teamspeak or Ventrillo. Also, why do people associate video chat with Skype? It's not like you HAVE TO use your camera. I just use it for voice comms, and the same goes for everyone I play with. Obviously I don't want to see their ugly snout and they don't want to see my face. Besides, I think it wouldn't be possible unless I had a second monitor or played in a window.
