texting is so last decade. I use BBM now (blackberry messenger). Free chatting (group also can) and the ability to send pictures for free is just indispensable

Hi, I have a Blackberry but I'm not familiar with this function...any chance you could give a brief explanation on how it works? Thanks.

Is your bb given by your company? If so they might lock out that functionality.

Nevertheless you can try to go to the BB app store (should be an icon in your BB if you have the later version blackberries), then search for blackberry messenger

go download it and try it out.

Basically its just like any IM client, but its constant on all the time. And its FREE.

I admit it if your friends dont have BB then this app is not all that useful (need the network effect). But in the country where I am from almost EVERYONE has bb now. So BBM is a godsend. I save a lot of money by just using BBM instead of texting or just calling them out right.

Thanks...that is exactly what I was wondering about. I know hardly anyone with a BB, so unfortunately it won't come in very handy. It is installed on my phone, so if the situation changes then it might be worth looking into. Seems like everyone is getting the Droid...and I can hardly blame them.

I text more than I call these days because:

1. it costs me less to send a text than to make a call for the same amount of information I need to convey to the recipient. I don't need to call somebody when I can just send a text like "meet me at building so and so, room 123" or "instrument scheduled at 4pm".

2. I'm usually in a place unsuitable for voice calls wherever I need to reach somebody or be reached. This is usually either in the lab or on a subway train where it's so noisy and impossible to hold a conversation over the phone.

3. I'm not a girl and I don't use text messages to chit chat.

4. My parents are now hard of hearing so instead of screaming my lungs off so they can hear me I just text them instead.

LDR. If you have an SO, extrapolate how much time you spend with her. I try to manage the same as much as doable. With a 10 free numbers on my end, and free incoming calls on her end, no reason not to.

My wife and I were apart for about a year while she was in school in another city before I moved. We talked about 15-20min a day, or about 400-500 min a month. What could you possibly be talking about for over 10 times that? It's impossible for you to have done anything meaningful in the day to even discuss at that level. I guess if you are 16 or something maybe. I dunno, I would go insane if someone wanted to waste that much of my time talking about nothing.

We have several projects that we work on together? When we would video game we used to use the phones as our voice channel (my internet was only dial-up back then). How about when she would go through one of her long recipes that I was trying to prepare that in my ignorance of fine dining I had to keep up-to-the-minute status on to keep from ruining? How about sitting for hours helping her with homework? The hours I've spent on computer issues? The couple of hours a month we sit and watch an anime together (she likes to give a critical evaluation as she goes along and honestly so do I)? Maybe we just care a little more for each other's company than you do for your wife's? I can't see not simply doing what you're doing, in whatever way works best, and if it uses a lot of time, fine, and if it doesn't fine. If it's not impeding on my other duties I don't see an issue. I guess maybe if you are 50 or something maybe. I dunno, I would go insane if my SO thought it was "cool" to limit conversation about some matter to remain in the good graces of busy bodies with little else to do than gripe about other's habits that have no effect on themselves.

200? I could probably do that in a day. Used to send over 10,000 texts a month, but thats down to around 2,000 now.

my daughter got grounded for almost 11k texts recently. the bulk of it was during the 2 weeks of "winter break" tho.

i have unlimited included in our plan, so its really not a money drain for her to do it. i just think its too much, and she needs to focus on other things besides her phone.

i go through about 1500 to 1600 texts a month. its the preferred communication method for talking to my ex. its also easier to send one message to all 3 of my kids instead of calling them all individually.
