i planned to keep my sub an extra month . . . as i got some eXcellent files [with zero problems - UNlike my "usual" dial;-up experience] - especially the 1GB Iron Wrath as a free Xpack for TC's RS (btw, you don't need the retail boxed version - my OEM copy worked great) . . .

. . . then those SOBs charged my cc 5 days early.

of course it's in the ToA - in tiny print . . . Hadsus is right - their practices aren't "shady" but ARE designed to extract maximum dollar from each subscriber - whether they piss them off or not. :Q

ANYWAY, they offered me 3 months at 1/2 price each month ($3.49) which IS a good deal and i may take them up on it IF there are some good "exclusives" like the Iron Wrath Xpack and like the uncorrupted TX2:Shadows of the Metal age . . . with my crappy dialup, it'd take me FOREVER to get those files.

ANyway - IMO - their pay service is OK . . . their Tech Support better than average . . . their files and exclusives are a plus with fast service and uncorrupted files - but be WARNED : CANCEL your account FIVE DAYS BEFORE they automatically renew you

mild  . . . barely
Thanks for the warning, guess I need to double check my CC statement!

I should also add that i purchased a liftetime subscription to gamespy3d early on. They responded by dropping gamespy3d and switching to gamespy arcade thus making my purchase useless.

That's bullsh!t. That's why I'm always leary about purchasing lifetime subscriptions, such as the likes of TiVo and Siruis. You always have to wonder whether it's actually lifetime or not.

Last I checked Gamespy3d still works. I also purchased it, wasn't very expensive and they continued updating it. I havn't had a need for it in awhile though so I'm not sure if it supports BF2.

The only non MMO i play is BF2 and they stopped updating it around the time of Battlefield 1942's release and no more updates are to come for they want you to switch to gamespy arcarde and to give all their customers that bought gamespy3d the shaft.

Wow it looks like my fileplanet founder's club access gets me access to gamespy arcade also. I should probably get it sometime. Shame they stopped updating 3d though, that was a great program for its time. I remember quakespy.

The whole Gamespy network was pretty cool when it took off in the Q1 days. QuakeSpy and later Gamespy were excellent. Gamespy Arcade is and has been a total piece of crap for years. And now it seems the recent All Seeing Eye releases are crap. Sucks that there is no simple server browser with broad support of games and a good UI. Fileplanet has sucked for years as well. I can understand though, there are lots of costs associated with the websites, bandwidth, programs etc that must be made up somewhere after the bubble burst.

Fileplanet is sh**, plain and simple. Not only does the download queue make you want to shoot yourself, but the website is sooo slow as well - it just takes forever to browse for a game download.

Anyway if i'm looking for a game download/patch/video I use gamershell - theres some adds I agree but at least you can quickly find whatever you want to download and pick a fast server for free that downloads at (usually) your full bandwidth speed.

As I recall, it wouldn't let me download anything from FP with firefox, it wanted me to use IE. I could be thinking of somewhere else, but I'm pretty sure it was FilePlanet.

They USED to work with mozilla/firefox, but since they switched, I haven't used them.

They DO work with Mozilla/FF but not as well - especially if you use a D/L manager - other then their crappy propritary one [it will "resume" - but ONLY if you pause it; not if you get cut off].

Since i use LeechGet, i pretty much used IE6 to D/L - flawlessly [it's the ONLY time i use IE6].

They have an "attitude" which pissed me off. i may [possibly] lose the dispute with VISA but it is gonna COST them . . . especially when i post in OT and on a few other forums.

I have used fileshack instead of fileplanet for some time now. Hardly ever a wait for stuff I've downloaded.

Well, i got charged 5 days "early" . . . . i did complain to GP's CS and they told me basically to "read better" :| . . .

. . . it actually IS in in their TOS "you may be chargd UP TO 5 days early" but since it is in the fine print [i.e. not bold - and it is something out of the ordinary] VISA agreed with me and charged it back to FP.

[imo] FP deliberately does screw their customer. . . . beware. Now that i know this, i would not hesitate to use their service again if i need it . . . but i would NOT recommend them as a "good place" to do business.

Final update . . . if you didn't, now you know.

Is it even legal to charge you 5 days in advance and not reimburse you when you cancel your account? I really doubt it.

the rep at VISA assured me it was "legal" . . . just not ethical . . . clearly it is designed to extract an extra month's payment from customers that may likely be dissatisfied with FP's service . . .

and it takes some time and effort to dispute a charge . . . i guess most people wont [i did on principle and to cost them extra for my irritation] . . .

i won't subscribe again and i would not recommenf FP's service.

Seems rather trivial to me. I mean if I loved a piece of software but then found out that if I canceled it 5 days before the next payment period that I might get charged, I don't think that would be a deal breaker. This is even more trivial in my case, because I pay every 2 years.

Anyone who is a subscriber, may want to check out the new site at fp3.fileplanet.com. It's slick.

the point is: YOU MUST CANCEL after 24 days of service - not the USUAL 30 - OR YOU WILL BE CHARGED for the next month . . . REread FP's tos if you are unclear.

it may be trivial to you but an irritation to some of us . . . the Customer Service ATTITUDE was "too bad . . . read the TOS more carefully next time" . . . i just didn't care to see what OTHER crap they dish out IF i remained a subscriber. . . as other have said there are MANY alternatives to FP . . .

and i didn't "love" their service . . . it is fair/OK . . . it's their crappy policies [designed to "trap" customers] that i object to.

Well yea, there are alternatives. The only good alternative to fileplanet is fileshack, which is part of shugashack. Awesome site and all, but you simply do not get as much as fileplanet. You don't get the ign insider access, gamespy access, gamespy arcade, access to the point system that fileplanet has for free games or access to the tons of betas that fileplanet subscribers get into. IMO, the betas were the biggest deal setter for me, I've gotten into every single beta I've wanted to get into since the WoW Stress Test.
