FP isn't that bad. It really depends on what I'm looking to DL, chances are though if FP has it it's pretty easy to find on google, however the closed beta's are nice to get in on. I signed up for a month when the FEAR beta was closed to subscribers only(yes i wanted to try it that bad), the bandwidth is pretty good for most downloads, I don't run across too many torrents that push 2-6 MBS down. I've since cancelled my sub, I'll probably re-sub for another beta in the future.

That is one thing i hate. I see these FREE TRIAL or OPEN BETA on some games only to find out it is a gamespy subscriber exclusive. The question is.... if FP (and ones like it) did not exist, would these be open to the public rather than signed away in an exclusive FP deal.

I'd say no actually. Take the WoW beta for example - it was downloaded more than 800,000 times from fileplanet, which at 2GB per hit is enough bandwidth usage to crush several thousand smaller hosts into the ground. (It actually crushed fileplanet into the ground for a few days as well come to think of it )

Who else is going to provide that kind of availability for free ?

P2P applications such as bit torrent, like how blizzard does their patches in WoW.
It's a business model...
My time is > $6.95 a month for bandwidth when I need something now, not in 30 minutes to an hour. Of course there are plenty of good sites as well that are free, but you have to wonder what is there business model? Are they going to be around in a year? two years? These places aren't online just to give free bandwidth, there is always a business model, some however are not successful. For the torrent lovers, yea P2P is great but seriously unless it's something like the BF2 demo how often do you hit more than 1MB? (Or it's just a matter of time before they switch to a similar business model like FP).
Like I said I'm not a sub currently with FP, they need more content to keep me paying a monthly fee, I guess the real question for most is are you willing to pay for bandwidth.

I've toyed with the idea of having a FP membership to avoid the queues. Like it out not, it is a one stop DL shop with known good files.

Well, i dfid it ONCE . . . this month just to get TX2 . . .

anyway, i started a thread What to D/L? - Game Demos? Mods? just to see what else i could get now that i have a really good "personal" server.

i won't keep my sub unless there is another "must have" file i can't get anywhere else.

thanks for all your comments.

Ummm...I still  ASE. AFAIK, ASE has only been infected by maybe two Yahoo ads...unless there is something I missed, is this just an irrational hate for anything Yahoo touches (mind you I don't like 'em either, but come on... as long as ASE is fine, I'll overlook ONE ad)?

I like FP... i've even paid for a subscription a couple of times. At least they don't force you to use specific software like Gamespot.

I didn't read the responses in the thread, but I have a number of problems with the whole system, not just FilePlanet. Yes, FilePlanet is a business, and if demand justifies/allows charging for access, then more power to them.

HOWEVER, the problem I have is that the demand shouldn't exist in the first place. If I drop 50 bones on a game that requires patching, why the hell should I have to pay a third party for acceptably quick access to a fix? That's absurd. If company XYZ releases a piece of software that needs to be fixed, it should be THEIR responsibility to host the file(s) in a manner that is reliably accessible to its customers. Customers shouldn't be herded across God's digitial creation so they can find a site that doesn't clobber them with 50 pop-ups, subscriptions (free or otherwise), etc. It's rediculous.

Now, for demos and free expansions, I feel differently. For free stuff, I don't have a problem with the way things currently work. It's the cyber-scavenger-hunts for essential/critical fixes that really piss me off.

What I don't like about them is their slippery business practices. They have deals all the time....something like 3 months for $10....which is a good deal. But after the deal is over they will continue to charge your card at the full monthly rate which a) is too much, IMO and b) they fail to notify you about. They don't tell you, hey your 3 months are over do you want to continue. It's probably in the fine print but I never saw it.

I have a fileplanet subscribers gold beta awesome exclusive account. It got me access to IGN and fileplanet. Now, there might be a lot of repeat content between the 2 sites, but I really can get some good media between the 2 without any work on my part. The only thing I hate? The login system for the gamespy network/ign IS ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. I keep thinking to myself, anyday now someone will rework all these sites, but it has yet to happen... maybe the project is too big I don't know.

For the price I pay, I sure get a lot of downloads instantly. I've gotten into every recent game beta that fileplanet has had, which is like free games and fileplanet even keeps track of all my beta keys.

But, thats why I like it. What's wrong with it? Well, there are plenty of people who were probably around when fileplanet just worked, you went there, you clicked a file, babam. There was internet before this whole get in line everybody needs a queue dealy. There was also tons of sites like walnut creek where you could get every game file under the sun with absolutely no hastle. People who remember those days really hate these days, where the internet feels like your swimming in your spam mail.

I certainly don't expect FilePlanet (or IGN, or Gamespot, etc) to provide free bandwidth... I just want game publishers to take ownership of their product after the fact. If we're talking free content, then it's open season for folks like FP. I have no problem with that... especially since all they're doing is providing a service that's in-demand. I personally refuse to pay for it, but that's only because I don't mind the small hassle of finding an alternative.

But for game patches that contain the text "fixes" anywhere in the readme, it should be a free download with all necessary bandwidth provided by the publisher (not the developer, not FilePlanet - THE PUBLISHER).

i think every company does this . . . AOL, MSN, earthlink . . . . they are 'hoping' you forget the date after the free trial - just ONE forgetul customer pays for 10 free trials.

Heck i mark ALL my ending dates on the calendar . . .

and thanks for the tip . . . i will look for FP's 'specials'

Ahhhh remember when you could download files from planet<insert game here>.com without it redirecting to fileplanet?

The reason I hate fileplanet? Now everyone and their mother except filefront is doing the paid subscription or "free subscription and wait" crap. "If they do it, we should, and get some money along the way! We can charge a cent cheaper and get more business!"

Even FileFront used to be better. Now it's a complete unorganized junkyard bought out by UGO (shudder). If they hired me for consultation on how to make the web site worse I'd be at a loss for words.

I yearn for the day I no longer have to login to every damn site I go to. What's the point? They're already shoving me ads up my ass. Now I get free spam on the side. I have a feeling this is simply continuing. Next thing you know I've gotta log in to google to search for something and pay $10/month.

ASE's friend list no longer works properly for me. It takes longer than did before they were bought by yahoo.

No.

Exactly. What the hell is the point of registering if you're not subscribing to their pay services?

It just ups the PITA factor (does bugmenot work with this site?)

the point? from FP's POV - registered users bring in bigger ad bucks.

now, i know what's wrong with FP

i planned to keep my sub an extra month . . . as i got some eXcellent files [with zero problems - UNlike my "usual" dial;-up experience] - especially the 1GB Iron Wrath as a free Xpack for TC's RS (btw, you don't need the retail boxed version - my OEM copy worked great) . . .

. . . then those SOBs charged my cc 5 days early.

of course it's in the ToA - in tiny print . . . Hadsus is right - their practices aren't "shady" but ARE designed to extract maximum dollar from each subscriber - whether they piss them off or not. :Q

ANYWAY, they offered me 3 months at 1/2 price each month ($3.49) which IS a good deal and i may take them up on it IF there are some good "exclusives" like the Iron Wrath Xpack and like the uncorrupted TX2:Shadows of the Metal age . . . with my crappy dialup, it'd take me FOREVER to get those files.

ANyway - IMO - their pay service is OK . . . their Tech Support better than average . . . their files and exclusives are a plus with fast service and uncorrupted files - but be WARNED : CANCEL your account FIVE DAYS BEFORE they automatically renew you

mild  . . . barely

you guys remember back in the day when HL was just new and getting mods and things from FP was the fastest way to go? I stopped using it when just like many of the other replies here happened to me. Stuck in like for an hour with the "20 minutes left!" message not ever changing. then they had to go and F up GameSpy3D. I loved that utility for joining games.. then they turned it into GameSpyArcade, ad banners and sh!t everywhere on it...

If i dont find mirrors i prefer FileFront as my major DL source.

Anyway, i am sending this thread link to FP . . . they can get have some "feedback" from us.

Personally, i plan to keep my account for a total of 5 months - the two i paid for and the 3 discounted months [$25 total]. If i had ANY other choice [broadband], i would not bother with them as they are "irritating". . . . but to get huge files with no problem is kinda good . . . and i have saved quite a lot on {two great} Xpacks - Iron Wrath & TX2 - i could not get any other way . . .
