What's wrong with my bosses computer!?

About three months ago I was asked by my boss to build him a new office computer. Knowing that he was going to be using it for lite office work, i put together a solid office rig.
2 duo E4400
Asus P5K-VM
1 Gig of OCZ Value (1 stick)
and a Seagate 320G Barracuda drive.
using on-board video
running on XP

But 4 days ago my boss went to restart his PC after it was "running slow? and it failed to boot. Reaching the windows boot up screen with the scrolling marker, staying on that screen for 12-15 seconds and then restarts to the MB start up screen only to repeat the boot process. And it will continue to do this over and over.

Looking in the BIOS everything is detected and running normally. I have moved the ram stick to all the memory slots thinking that may make a difference, I was wrong.


I had to replace the crap power supply that came with the case after it was hissing and started to smell, but I really don't think that has anything to do with the problem I am having now.

Anyhow, if anyone can think of why I pc may restart itself when it gets to the windows loading screen, please let me know.

Does your boss have Internet access? Sounds to me like he got infested with malware.

yes he does have access,
funny you should say that because this started to happen one day after i installed AVG free addition on this pc.
he did have a VP program before though.

I have had problems like that when my CPU was overheating. Reapplying the heatsink with less thermalpaste did the trick then. But after 3 months, that is a little doubtful unless you changed something on accident in the BIOS.

The PSU could have toasted something on the computer too. I have had that happen more than once, so I don't buy cheapo PSU's even for crap systems anymore.

welling i am using a zalman 120mm cpu fan and its running cool, looking in the BIOS the cpu is only at 30-38

this is the first time since i built it that have even looked at it.
if the ram was friend, would it boot to the windows screen?

Create a boot cd and run memtest:
http://www.memtest.org/

Then use the xp cd, bring up the recovery console and run chkdsk.

Then on reboot, hit F8 to get the startup menu, and select "disable automatic reboot on system failure".

Lastly, recommend him a Dell so that Dell is the one at fault next time.

Did you uninstall the other anti-virus program before installing AVG? Two installed anti-virus programs is always bad (but fixable).
