What's wrong with my friend's car?

It's a old manual toyota, and the car shudders occasionnaly, and like sorta "stalls" but comes back to life. basically, it loses power for a split second, people in the car go forward from the deceleration, and it starts going again and is fine... it's just shuddering for a few seconds every couple minutes

she says the car is due for an oil change any day now. Is it possible that a screwed oil filter/dirty oil is the problem?

My tercel used to do that.. before it died.

I suggest checking to see if you got oil, and coolant. CHances are its your MAF or EGR or clutch that's causing it. My car even though a fuel injected car had an idle adjustment.. that's how I got around.. increase idle and run her..she aint living any longer.

like virusag11 there is a long list, I would start with what he listed, Tune Up (New plugs, Plug Wires, Timing, Air Filter, Fuel Filter) then get back to us, if he hasn't has a tune up in a long time it's something that would need to be done anyway.
