i bought a thunderbird processor 1.4Ghz about almost a month ago. Since i've been using it the system information indicated that the maximum speed of the processor is 1200Mhz. This actually puzzles me as if i've been cheated for buying not a genuine 1.4Ghz processor. Currently i'm using WINME as an operating system for my pc. I've decided to use the ASUS A7V133-C motherboard with my 256Mhz PC100 SDRAM.
The processor's temperature will rise up to 65'C if I overclocked it to 1.4Ghz but it will only max up to 57'C if I used the default 1050Mhz. I suspect that the processor is also causing my running programs to automatically shut down. How do I know if my processor is genuinely an AMD t-BIRD 1.4Ghz? what i've noticed is that there is a stamp that wrote 1400 on it. PLEASE HELP ME.

You overclocked it up to 1.4Ghz? That is it default speed my friend, it is not overclocking. If the default for the chip is 1050Mhz, then that means you have a 133Mhz FSB Athlon, the setup being 10.5 x 133 = 1400Mhz. You have your FSB set to 100Mhz, so that is why you are getting 10.5x100=1050Mhz. The trouble here is you only have PC-100 memory, which is not spec'd to run at 133Mhz (but it may do if you're lucky and it's good quality RAM). This might be why you are unstable at 1400Mhz. What kind of cooler are you using? 57C to 65C is pretty damn hot!

hmmm....ok my fault there...so this means that i'm using the 1.4ghz cpu right? its just the ram that is causing all the problems. but, i believe that my processor is 266Mhz FSB athlon plus my mobo is capable for it...is it still caused by my rams? my cooler = COOLER MASTER EP5-6I11 -recomended for 1.4 athlon..

Get some good quality PC133 (or Higher) RAM, and set your FSB speed to 133 Mhz, this will give you your default CPU speed of 1400.
Basically what MCS said.

By the way MCS, I wanted MCS as a username and couldn't get it, and now I know who to blame! :

this might sound stupid, but could u tell me how exactly do i change the FSB?

is there a program that will read the processor's
family & stepping & etc?

The place to change the FSB is the BIOS ... or (if you have one of THOSE boards) - via DIP-switches on the motherboard (make sure you consult documentation FIRST).

Hope this helps .

dude i think i know what your looking at , your in the asus probe aren't you and it says something like (top tab -information-then on the right side on the bottom it says system information -) in there it has a bunch of things , one of them being your external clock (bus and ram speed) that should say 133 then there is max speed 1200 and then current speed (for me its 1333) forget about the max speed it says that no matter what motherboard or chip you have... it has said it since my a7v duron 650 combo to my a7a tbird 1333 combo.... if that is what your looking at whic hit sounds that way to me then that is how it should be read , also whatever your bios says at boot up or in the bios is right

mstudd - blame away Surprising that somebody else actually wanted this combination of letters...

ccili - I think if you get some PC-133 RAM and set your FSB to 133 you will be all set.

Why dont you check, take the HeatSink off and on the core of the chip look for the letters "A1400" under the first line which should be "AMD Athlon"

Well, even if he sets it to run at default 11.5x133, he won't be all set. He still has some pretty serious heat problems. Running at 65C under his rated speed is a problem. I think a new HSF might be in order. This is probably the reason for his lockups and programs closing. As for the Asus Probe, Heffe is right, its maxed at 1200. Only way to know for sure is to check the core, A1400AMS3C are the numbers you are looking for, and while in there, note the stepping as well.
