Whats wrong with this hard drive?

I picked up a Maxtor 80gb 8meg cache drive the other day and put in my file server PC.

At the bootup screen were it shows all the IDE drives it shows the maxtor drive. But I cant format the drive. I cant see it in windows. And when I run Fdisk it doesn't even show the drive, just the partitions I already have on my primary drive. Is something wrong with it?

What OS are you running and what motherboard do you have?

Win 98 SE.
The motherboard is an older Vega model.

I also tried it in a Win XP machine, it being the only drive (primary master) and it wouldn't boot, it just said: BOOT DISK FAILURE INSERT A SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER. I couldn't boot from a floppy or the XP CD either, but those are other problems I assume.

I just wonder why its detected on the bootup screen but I cant see it under FDISK or in windows (my computer).

Any thoughts?

Check the jumpers to see if there set up right... also check the bios to make sure the motherboards picking the drive up correctly..thats all i can think of at the moment i had the same problem once with a quantum drive i bought

you could try using the maxtor utilities to format the drive and or diagnostics wich will help you find out whats going on and allow you to do a low level format if the drive is botched up so bad you cant even get it to format corectly.
