ibm hard drives seem to fail more often than other brands, as seen with the 75GXP series. hence, most people avoid IBM Deathstar

same drive is $134 shipped on pricewatch...

Also note, this drive is the #2 fastest overall ide hard drive out (behind the WD1200JB).. It ranks the fastest for web and file servers (ahead of the WD1200JB).. But quality of the drive is doubted by many because of the 75GXP fiasco (and the few 60GXP problems).. Also, IBM has sold their hard drive plants and may hand off support for their hard drive to another company too..

I still have not had a problem with ibm drives but I believe others have so it looks like the new 120 series by ibm might take care of this. here is the link to newegg ibm drives also you can check out other drives there as they have some decent deals. try dell and get coupon from jumpondeals.com they have some good deals now also. good luck

First there was the problem with the abnormally high failure rate of the 75GXP line. Then, the 60GXP line was launched and it had a high failure rate (not nearly as high as the 75GXP line, but high compared to all other "modern" hard drives). So the theory goes that it's a engineering flaw (not a manufacturing flaw). Even so, the 60GXP line was given a usage rating of 333 hours / month (or was it 240 hours/ month). Well, either way, people are wary because a significant amount of people leave their computers on 24 / 7. As for the 120GXP line, I haven't heard much - but I believe it uses the same technology as the other two (glass platters or something?).

Yadda yadda yadda - you've been warned.

In conclusion - a WD drive is recommened for performance, reliability, and quietness. Yes, the IBM drives may be a little faster, but last I checked it wasn't by much and it wasn't in every category.

I'd take an IBM drive over a Western Digital any day of the week. I was a big fan of Western Digital until I realized that EVERY WD drive I'd own has died. I've had fewest problems with (IDE) Seagate, Maxtor, and yes, IBM. Never had a problem with a SCSI drive though...

a WD 1000bb crapped out on me yesterday just five days after I bought it. I love MAxtor, never had a problem with those. And I also like SCSIs, never had any problem with any of them either.

I have a 30GB 75GXP that has been running for two years. I had a 45GB 75GXP as my secondary drive that failed back in May.

My RMA History over past ten years:
IBM Drives : 1/2
Western Digital: 3/5
Maxtor: 1/3
Seagate: 0/2

I would buy IBM again.

IMHO, Seagate is the longest lasting hard drive. I had 4 of them on RAID0 for about 2.5 years and they haven't failed yet. I haven't had a problem with 2 of my 60GXP's. I would get the WD hard drive because it has the 8mb cache

I have 3 ibm hd's raided , a 30gig, a 45gig and a 60gig, and working perfectly, for over a year now as a server, they stay cool with those internal hd coolers that attach to the back of the drive. Only has 1 failed on me in the past 2 years which didnt have a hd cooler on it. I think the rule with "raid" is you have to use the same brand of hd or you will have problems, maybe thats why i had so much success.

Buying a hd from a reputable dealer, at least I belive means getting you a good product, bought all 3 from mwave as oem over the year.

If I needed a new hd today, that 120gig would be sweet

:Q:disgust:

What do you do with your hard drives? Zap them with a stun gun? No, seriously, are they RAID, high-speed, servers, or what?

My RMA History with IDE drives:

IBM: 0/0
Western Digital: 0/1
Maxtor: 0/3
Seagate: 0/3
Whatever the hell was in my Texas Instruments POS laptop: 1/1

My girlfriend's RMA IBM History: 1/1 (75GXP Deathstar 40GB)

I have lost 2 western digital drives (all I have ever owned) and 1 75gxp (all I have ever owned from ibm)then yesterday I lost the only drive I had from seagate (10k ultra 2 cheetah) So, I think hdd's just dislike me, on that note I like to find the best bang for the buck.
