depending on how much/if I could collect unemployment or other benefits (food stamps or housing assistance?) I could probably survive for 4-6 months without a job assuming I cut way back on spending (ie: cancel cable, stop going out, stop shopping at whole foods, etc)... if I hit that 6 month mark without a job or without a job that could pay the rent, my last resort plan B would be moving back in with my parents and taking out loans to go back to school -- the one benefit of where my parents live, tons of great universities within driving distance. I could pretty easily commute to any of the manhattan colleges, not to mention rutgers or princeton in NJ.

As someone who was just laid off and currently hunting for another full time position between contracts, my plan is fairly simple: Look for work for a few months, if the job market gets worse, go back to school.

I would live in a tent and use my moped to travel around. I could survive a few months....

I've been thinking about this lately myself. I've been living at home while working so my savings are pretty decent. It'd be a great opportunity to travel abroad, which is something I've been wanting to do for a while.

I've got about 4 months of take home pay (after taxes and all deductions) saved up. With unemployment I should be able to easily make it 6-8 months, maybe more if I get a severance package and sell a car like we're planning to do anyways.

If I somehow manage to run through that without finding something to support myself I'll suck up my pride, pack up my junk and head back to live with family. That's what family is for, if I fall they catch me, if they fall I catch them.

if?

i don't see it as that bad of an occurrence, I am going in debt right now but in the long run this will have forced me to get a better education so i will hit the ground running once this thing goes away

I'd be good for a while..with unemployment especially. I'm confident that I could find another job fairly quickly.

I've been laid off once last year already, so hopefully that won't be repeated soon.

Hmmm, I wonder if I inspired this?

My plan is to move back home next week. Luckily I don't have a lease (the lease on my furnished apartment expired last month, I was looking to do a rotation in another city). I have plenty of money saved up, especially since I will hardly have to pay anything (other than my sanity) when I'm at home. I'll look for another job. Oh yeah, and a couple vacations.

I am a student right now, luckily for us my mother and father have jobs that basically have gone un affected by all of this and are pretty secure. If the worst came. we would move back to mexico where we have a house and you can live off 200$ a week comfortably, oh and mexico is only 30 minutes south of us.

if you cant live off $200 a week comfortably in the US, you're doing it wrong.

er, not just wrong, you're doing it REALLY wrong.
