if you cant live off $200 a week comfortably in the US, you're doing it wrong.

er, not just wrong, you're doing it REALLY wrong.

now have 3 kids and say that again. see how dumb it sounds?

after going thru what i have the last 3 years since my ex left, paying down all the debt we built up together (with both salaries we had plenty of disposable cash), having to replace my favorite (paid off) car with a newer truck (with a payment) and still paying on school loans, im barely starting to get savings built up again. if i lost my job right now, id be in a pretty deep hole. i have family to help out, but damn that would suck big time.

$200 a week and live comfortably? SO $800 a month to live? Hell my rent and utilities alone are double that. Apparently you haven't been to the northeast lately.

Sell my car, move back in with ma, and go back to school. Kinda like being 16 all over again.

After being laid off in December I am doing the backup plan now - only it was not actually planned out before it was implemented.

I am living off of unemployment and the fiancee brings in a little income as a graduate student. I received a severance which should tack on some more months of survivability. I have already sent out resumes and had some job interviews, but nothing has panned out. I am also applying for some MBA programs hoping that works out. If business school doesn't pan out - hitting a lot of late deadline dates that appear to be more competitive - then after unemployment runs out I'll just snag whatever job I can.

While I am sure one could live on $200 a week in parts of this country, it is pretty silly to think that it can be done everywhere.

Our rent plus utilities is ~$1,000 month. That is not even including food, cell phones (no land-line), and other incidentals. In our area the price we pay for rent for two of us is pretty darn reasonable.

...or the mid-Atlantic/DC area, or probably most of the West coast, or Chicago, or Houston, or....

800 a month should almost cover my mortgage. put food, utilities, student loan and bare necessity kid stuff and its barely a drop of what i need a month. i think you meant to quote the idjit i quoted. i agree with you

I've changed my plan, I think I would just sit at home, watch TV, eat corn chips and masturbate.

i already executed my backup plan. i proposed and got married. my wife works for government and wont get fired.

People always mention the gov't jobs being pretty good about this, but what are the cons? It can't be all good can it?

My last govt job was county, a temp job and I was hoping to get hired permanent... didn't happen. The 1st govt job I had was also county (different county), and someone there commented that it looked like I was trying to work my way out of a job (I was quick and went through the work fast). I was in high school then, it was my first real job, summer).

In between I had a federal govt job, it was a temp 3 month position and I got a 3 month extension because I really needed the money. The management there was really trying to get me to come on full time and there would have been tremendous security and a certain promise of advancement (very very slow advancement), but I hated the place, absolutely detested the work. It was all rules and paperwork. My boss was the biggest coffee addict I've ever seen by far. The conversations I overheard from my cubicle irritated me no end. There were no sexy girls of any note. The only thing I could think of was to save every damned penny I could pinch and find myself a job in the private sector. I was more than willing to give up security for the romance and potential excitement of unlimited potential of pursuing success elsewhere. Now, I'm certain that there's government work that isn't so unpalatable, but from where I sat (Federal Building in downtown San Francisco) I couldn't see it.

No, that would be a huge change for me, going from potato chips to corn chips.

Rent/house payment + taxes + insurance
Gas
Electric
Phone
Water
Car payment, maybe
Car insurance
Health insurance?
Food and other consumables.

$9600/yr. puts you well below the poverty line and would probably make you eligible for public assistance.

Well I may have over estimated, that was a rough guess when i typed the post. In reality 100$ or less will get you through 1 week for a family of 4. In one month you would really only need about 800$ or so assuming you are renting a home if you don't already have one, most homes for rent that are a big size or 2 story are like 400-600$ a month, some cheaper. Since we already own a home, we would only pay electricity, cable, phone, internet + food. That'll take maybe 500$ a month. All my mothers family lives there and own home, my uncles locksmith shop maybe bring in about 200$ a week so about 800$ a month, they pay rent for about 280$ and have some credit card payments, utilities and food and they get along just fine and have some $$ left

It's cheap to live there i tell ya

So at some point you thought to yourself, "Self, my anecdotal life situation should be applicable to everybody everywhere."

Really? Are you seriously that dense?

I wasn't saying that ^^ applied to everyone, it was just an example of what it takes for a normal low maintenance fmaily. Some people are gonna be high maintenance or like to spend a lot more $$$, want to have new cars, bigger homes, etc. But my main point was how cheap it is to live there
