29.3, I'm 6'2" 228 lbs, I need to get down to about 210 to see a six pack again. I am alittle overweight. I think they should re-evaluate what is considered obese, like if you have a six pack your probably normal; have alittle bit of a gut, overweight; can't see your penis when you look down, well you're obese.

18.8 for me.

Also, it's well known that BMI is a load of crap because you can gain weight as muscle instead of fat.

That matters for bodybuilders and pro football players whose BMIs are in the upper 20s and low 30s.

For the other 99% of the population, it's not the freakin' bible or something, but BMI (plus or minus a couple points) is a decent guideline.

18.8. I'm surprised it is actually that high.

That said, BMI is about the most useless thing ever as it does not take into account whether the weight is fat or muscle. In my case, my BMI is low and it is because I don't have a lot of either one

BMI isn't meant as the whole truth, it's simply meant as a best estimate. Almost everyone knows their height and weight, but very few people have ever had an accurate body fat percentage measurement, so you have to go with the data that is available.

Anyway, I am 6'1 and 170-175 pounds, so around 22.5

Hair under 16 last I checked. 40 years old, 6" and 210lbs.

BMI checkers are mostly bullshit, unless you do it by water.

Plenty of muscle, but I could stand to lose a few pounds of fat too.
Work out 3-4 days a week and play soccer for cardio.

BMI is bad metric for weight lifters.

Most body builders are obese in the eyes of BMI.

39.

It was 32 when I was in awesome shape. (back in high school, after 3 years on the swim team, when I could do pullups, bench a lot, squat a lot, and swim many miles without a break)

Now I am fat and I can barely lift 300 or 400 pounds because I am wimpty too!

23.7. 6' 175lbs. Two Tough Mudders, lots of squats. BMI is a bit silly...I could easily put on 10lbs and not be overweight (but I'd have a BMI over 25).

BMI is a horrible metric.

It is barely useful for people who live completely sedentary life styles their entire lives. It's completely broken for anyone who was ever an athlete at any point of their lives. Muscle mass is completely ignored using their measurements.

I used to be in the 27 range with 5% body fat. Now I'm in the 32 range with a much higher fat ratio

Damn you appetite without the corresponding workout routine!

Yeah, the BMI metric isn't very good for bodybuilders as it overestimates body fat. For instance I have 9-10% body fat and my BMI is 24.9.

The Navy uses this calculator to determine body fat.
http://fitness.bizcalcs.com/Calculator.asp?Calc=Body-Fat-Navy

It is the same as we use in the Marine Corps, except we have a little stricter percentages allowed. For males 18-27 they are allowed to be no more than 18%. 28-39 is 19%, and keeps going up. Females are allowed 24% at ages 18-27 due to them being naturally more fatty. If you are over the limit allowed, you are put on BCP, Body Composition Program. You have to log what you eat, burn, etc. You get re-weighed often. If you do not lose the weight, you can get NJP's. If still not, then you will get admin sepped out of the Marine Corps. Which is fine with me, I hate seeing fat Marines. I'd like to kick more out.

At 6" I am only allowed to be 203lbs, without being taped. Like what is used in the link above. Which is insulting because that is what fatties have to get who are actually fat. I'm just over my weight for my heights but far from fat. It is an idiotic system that somehow still has traction in the world of fitness.

Good thing completely sedentary describes the majority of the American population

The vast majority of the US population is pretty sedentary. It's an easy measurement for people who have never been athletic that's a base line but it's still not accurate.

Same here, I started running last fall and ended up dropping 15lbs.

I have been running pretty steadily for going on four years now and I haven't lost a single pound! I know I am healthier for it, but the more I run the more I eat. Runger is real.

24 on the dot using weight from a while back. I put on a few pounds, but I barely had a beer belly then.

BMI isn't actually a terrible measurement at all. It is best to paint a very broad stroke, sure, but it gives a great rough estimate at the individual level.

If you are skinny or fat, there is no hiding that with BMI. It is only those who have dense muscle that end up having inaccurate BMI, which means for an accurate body fat assessment, they have to measure various portions of their body and utilize more complex calculations to determine body composition, which is still not necessarily a slam dunk but far closer.

If you have too little muscle, well, that's actually precisely what low BMI figures are good at helping point out.

Take Schmide below. A 6-pack generally represents achieving around 10% body fat or less, depending on individual physiology. That means you are far more dense, and the weight number used in BMI is indiscriminate in regards to composition.

So you can look like you have an unhealthy weight by having a high BMI yet having a higher proportion of muscle.

But you can't appear to be potentially unhealthy by having too low of a BMI - you're skinny or not.

Which makes me ask: y'all are very skinny, aren't you? Eat more protein and go to a gym!

I've always been kinda skinny, but not abnormally so, and currently have a 22.9 BMI. I'm working on cutting my little pouch (beer, liquor, and carbs are sooo fucking tasty :awe but also working on building more muscle, so it'll be interesting to see where my BMI goes in the short and long term - if I'll build my mass through muscle than I cut off or if my mass gain will be slower than my fat loss.

Side lecture:

If you can see you actual abdominal muscle definition, you don't have much in the way of adipose fat, and you generally don't begin shedding large quantities of adipose fat until you have cut down a majority of the visceral fat that is behind the abs (gut interior, between organs). That's the fat nobody should have, it's bad, bad stuff for your overall health. Adipose fat is actually pretty good for you and useful, and if anyone were to get down to sub-5% total body fat, your health is likely taking a nose dive. Heck, I've seen mention that under 8% for a male between 20-40 is unhealthy. Women usually are advised not to cross below 10-13%, and women can see abdominal definition earlier than men due to physiological differences in where fat is stored.

5'10 195 = 28.5 yet I have a 6 pack. Go figure. Stupid metric.

It's not that bad.

If you had a lot of muscle but end up putting on a lot of fat weight after stopping activity and becoming lazy, the BMI reflects that. Even more likely, you'll have lost muscle mass and had it filled in with more intra-muscular fat and more adipose fat, unless you maintained basic fitness.

BMI accounts for a moderate amount of muscle, it doesn't completely disregard it. After all, we all have skeletal muscle.

Now, if you do have a lot of muscle and minimal fat, then yes the BMI is inaccurate, but those who are fit already know the inaccuracies of BMI and it is not a concern. I'd argue that BMI is only grossly inaccurate for those who are actively fit and lean at time of measurement, past days of glory not a factor.
