Another vote for Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land.
Also, Asimov's Foundation series. Actually, just about any sci-fi by Asimov. Bicentennial Man is my favorite short story of all time. (And an absolutely horrid movie adaptation. Robin Williams should be shot and dismembered for that performance, the script-writers should be burned alive, and the director crushed by a Transformer.)
