In the books, I always liked the Battlemaster. Big and strong, but looked fast and cool, and had a good mix of weapons. Ready for ANYTHING. I also loved the Sturmfeur tank. For just plain meanness, the Hatchetman. Dude was ready to fight.

In MW2, I used that 50 ton thing with a bunch of lasers on the arms (Nova?). Just two medium pulse lasers and a lot of heat sinks and you could flat murder everything.

In MW3...hmm. It's been a while. Really can't remember. I just remember putting 7 ERPPCs on one of my mechs on a snow level...I could fire them in sequence pretty well, but if I fired them all at once, I'd make splodey...hehe.

In MW4, I liked the Gladiator. I'm a beam man, so the hardpoints were just what I needed. Man, that one girl's voice was so sexy. Angel, maybe?

MadCat II
No, the Mark 2 madcat is an Assault Class.

The medium mech with a canopy is the Catapult. It has a buttload of missiles and some Beam hardpoints.

sounds like the vulture

The Atlas and only because that was the ultimate Mech in the games. I hear the new MechWarrior is going to do away with the progression through the tonnage.

The Vulture is a heavy, and didnt have the nose that he was talking about.

I just got done playing through Mechwarrior 4 and Mercenaries (Black Knight sucks by comparison.) Forgot how cool it was to use 16 medium X-pulse's to take out a Daishi's legs in 4 hits. But the heat is a bitch. Its a good thing lasers are so light, cuz you'll need about 20 heatsinks to counteract them.

Old school Elemental w/SR2, I had feild day durring ower LAN parties watching people get pissed off because they couldnt see who was pecking at them.

Locaust/Firefly modded SCAM,BECON,MASK and extra JJ most of the time, Let long rang and artillery do the rest.

Back in MPBT:3025 (anyone remember that? was in beta for over half a year, then EA canceled. I still despise them for it) I used the medium-laser-boat version of the Hunchback to great effect. with careful aim you could headshot people pretty quickly before you shutdown from the heat.
My team mates would be pissed because I got all the kills that way (=money) so I switched to an Enforcer.
For fun, I would take the Spider (light mech with BB guns for weapons) and use his speed to easily down medium mechs. So fun.

My nick in MPBT was MadCat, still one of my favorite mechs.
We moved on to MW4 but it wasn't the same, too cartoonish.

EDIT: Special mention goes to the Panther. Not a "favorite" but will always be remembered as the mech I had while killing 3 Kuritan players, all by myself. They "pitied" me and came one by one. Their mistake...

I liked this one,

Battle Armor
Tonnage: 1
Top Speed: 60
Tech: Inner Sphere
Designed by Lieutenant Foster using data from the Ragnarok data core, it has a powerful claw capable of slashing a ?Mech's armor off and neurohacking. Its weapons are a light pulse laser and an extremely powerful mortar.

Take the legs off and they do down hehehe

Anyone else here take the fire moth and throw MASK on it so that you were super fast?

~430 kmph I think... removed everything, added in max engines and MASC. Crazy!

Both the vulture and the catapult are heavies(just barely).

60 tons and 65 tons respectively. Mad Cats weigh in at 75 and Mad Cat MK2's at 90 tons. Just added this for a bit of perspective aka1nas.

Was just replaying Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries and I have to say the Thor is pretty cool. The Madcat is cool looking but I found it's armor somewhat weak compared to others.

Just finished Mercenaries an hour ago.

Fafnir is sweet because it has a pair of 4-point ballistic slots. You could have two heavy gauss rifles, or four light. Thats excellent damage close up and really damn good damage at 1200 meters.
Or you could have a crapload of AC2's but I think you'd run out of tonnage before you filled it up.

Even after going through the games again I stand by my favorite: An Assault with lots of omni and beam slots, filled up with medium pulse or medium X-pulse. With over a dozen of them you can drop the legs on anything quickly, even the Atlas or Gladiator. Just watch the heat after you are done with your kill. Usually the time it takes you to find another targer will be enough (assuming you have plenty of heatsinks). The best part about pulse lasers is the low weight so you can max out armor or increase engine power a great deal. Either way you wont get killed easily.
I'd love to have a huge bank of AC2's or AC5's but the weight always kept me from doing it.

Clan Mechs
Timber Wolf/Mad Cat.
Summoner/Thor.
Mad Dog/Vulture.

Innersphere Mechs
Bushwacker.

Almost all Innersphere mechs sucked ass compared to their Clan counterparts. The only one that is/was actually semi-decent was the Bushwacker.

Mad Dog/Vulture >>>>>> Catapult.
The Catapult pales in comparison. I'm not sure why there are some people here who seem to like that mech.

A lot of the IS mechs in MW4 are still the old-tech models from the 3015 era with upgraded weapon systems. These mechs are supposed to be much worse than clan tech. The 3060 era IS models are more competitve, i.e.:

Uziel
Bushwacker
Hauptmann
Fenrir

The Catapult is popular because it's a somewhat iconic classic battletech design that's been around for most of the life of the game and is still a fairly decent performer.

Ok guys, I am pretty far into MW4 Merc. and I am having some trouble with getting some quick mechs with decent firepower and armor. What mech is the best for this? And what type of weapons?

So you are pretty far into MW4 Mercenaries yet you are still lost.
Hmmmmmmm........

Ok, I'll help.

The Nova Cat is pretty good all around for speed and firepower. Its a Heavy. Once you get midway through the game you should be checking your Free Market after every battle. You'd be amazed how many good mechs pop up all the time.
For weapons I recommend a healthy mix of medium pulse and large pulse lasers. Dont waste too much money on PPC's and E PPC's. That big damage might seem nice but the recycle time is so high you'll be dead in a messy fight.
I've found over long battles its the pulse lasers that are the most dangerous, especially if you group them intelligently and manage your heat. Because of their accuracy and rate of fire I generally go straight for the legs on big mechs, its the easiest way to take them out quickly. Usually in most single player games I give myself something with plenty of beam and omni slots. I give my lance mates the humanoid mechs like Thors, Loki's, Atlas's and Hellspawns. Those tend to have a good mix of each type of hardpoint.

For long range support let your lance mates have the Catapults and Vultures. Give them plenty of LRM's and ER Lasers. They tend to not shoot as fast as you so the higher recycle times are not a big deal.
For large guns use the Mauler and Mad Cats.

Daishi > Atlas.

The Daishi looks cooler (I'm not a fan of how the atlas looks) and it has better hardpoints for the weapons. Also it is much faster.

I've been using a Thanatos with 3x Light Gauss with 90 ammo each as much as possible in MW4 Vengeance. Selectively toggle active radar, ECM, and AMS = they never know what hit them

I never really liked the feel of the long range ACs or guass in the computer game, the viewable distance tremendously negates the value of something about to target to such a long range.

With some mechs you can squeeze in 4 light gausses.
