Ok guys, I am pretty far into MW4 Merc. and I am having some trouble with getting some quick mechs with decent firepower and armor. What mech is the best for this? And what type of weapons?
So you are pretty far into MW4 Mercenaries yet you are still lost.
Hmmmmmmm........

Ok, I'll help.

The Nova Cat is pretty good all around for speed and firepower. Its a Heavy. Once you get midway through the game you should be checking your Free Market after every battle. You'd be amazed how many good mechs pop up all the time.
For weapons I recommend a healthy mix of medium pulse and large pulse lasers. Dont waste too much money on PPC's and ER PPC's. That big damage might seem nice but the recycle time is so high you'll be dead in a messy fight.
I've found over long battles its the pulse lasers that are the most dangerous, especially if you group them intelligently and manage your heat. Because of their accuracy and rate of fire I generally go straight for the legs on big mechs, its the easiest way to take them out quickly. Usually in most single player games I give myself something with plenty of beam and omni slots. I give my lance mates the humanoid mechs like Thors, Loki's, Atlas's and Hellspawns. Those tend to have a good mix of each type of hardpoint.

For long range support let your lance mates have the Catapults and Vultures. Give them plenty of LRM's and ER Lasers. They tend to not shoot as fast as you so the higher recycle times are not a big deal.
For large guns use the Mauler and Mad Cats.

That's interesting to hear.
One of my preferred configurations has always been to carry dual ER-PPC's (Clan version of course) and target one of the legs using the group fire options.

That almost always results in either the mech falling down or getting dizzy(unless they're assault class) which negates the long recovery time of the weapon.

I wouldn't carry PPC's for short close range combat though. I also wouldn't carry PPC's if I'm facing 3 or more mechs at once vs only myself unless they're light or medium class mechs of course. Better to just use Pulse Lasers and run around.

I've also tried the strategy with tri ER-PPC's and it works well, but has it's caveat.
If you shoot and miss, you're dead.
If you shoot and hit, they're dead.

Carrying 3 ER-PPC's with heatsinks leaves little room for anything else for backup which is why I prefer the dual PPC configuration.
Since I only use Mad Cat/Timber Wolf, Thor/Summoner, Vulture/Mad Dog, and Bushwackers my point on that tri ER-PPC configuration may be a little off if someone decides to load up an Atlas/Annhilator/Daishi/Dire Wolf or other assault class mechs and test the configurations.

I have to say that I have been often fond of a triple or quadruple ER-PPC setup in open field combat. Outranging anything else on the battlefield, you can soften up the AI reasonably well. Kick your engine into reverse and pump out a few more shots before the enemy closes in.

In Mechwarrior 4, I always feared the Awesome. Being my favourite mech of all time (mainly because of the Battletech cartoon), it is also armed with triple ER PPC's and the AI seems to be a good shot with them, tearing you up quite easily if you are not careful.

I believe in Mechwarrior 4 Mercs, theres a mission where you have to defend a manufacturing plant which is producing a new mech design (Templar I think it is). I love that Mech when you first get it. It's deadly.

I feel rather noob in this discussion despite playing Mechwarrior 2, 3, 4 and all expansions. I guess I need to replay most of them and refresh my memory of the universe.

This is a fanastic coincidence. I was just playing a new game in MW4 and the first Assault you find in the campaign is an Awesome. I tried doing triple PPC's for a few levels and got my butt kicked. Because of the beams travel time its too easy for me to miss at long range. I did better with my pulse laser technique.

Typically, chain fire your PPC's at long range. 1 Hit out of 3 is better than missing all 3. You should at least do some damage before anything closes in.

As the enemy closes in on your position, fire all 3 PPC's in one group can be very effective and heavily damage most areas on most mechs.

I am often a huge fan of AC20's or LB-X AC20's. Their knockdown is devastating to light mechs and damage is reasonable against the heavier groups.

I have tried LRM/SRM boats, AC boats, Pulse Laser boats, ER Laser boats, etc etc. and I always prefer ER PPC/Gauss power for some reason.

Personal opinion, I preferred the way MW3 handled pulse lasers. I dont think they were too good (going off memory) but felt much more realistic with their sustained beam of light.
