I personally prefer Quake 2 because it's mindless shooting but it got boring after the 15th time....

quake one was good but it was missing something......

quake 3 was great but there was no single player ass-kicking...

Quake 2. The mods alone made it worth it.

3 was a failure in almost every sense.

1 I don't remember much of. The only time I played it was in computer class back when the game was new and taking the world by storm. We were all enamored with the "cool" teacher who cracked the shareware version.

GLQuake1 -- because it was the game that started it all for me. I still play it today against bots.

I play q3a almost daily...

But, I loaned a friend Q2 a few weeks ago ... and started playing LAN over at his house.
Seems I forgot how much fun those 'old map' designs had.
I been have'n fun re-exploring those old maps and fraggin my friend.

So, even though I vote Q3A, I still enjoy Q2 also.

I'd like to add ...

... that QUAKE is how I became a member here ...
.. I was playn someone who was 'OCd' ...

he told me to readup at this website forum to find out how to ... OC

... so ... I learned hardware here ... just so I could play kick ass QUAKE ...

Just remembering that $5,000 Dell Pentium system I bought in 1998 puts shivers up my spine ...

I considered gluing my hand to my mouse in order to enhance Q2 CTF in any way possible.

Damn, I loved Q2 CTF.

Definitely Quake 1. It (and its mods) started online gaming as I know it. TF was simply god-like, as was a lot of the DM/team DM mods. Now Quake 2 I didn't get into as much but I did like some of its mods like Action Quake 2 and Rocket Arena. The DM maps in both of those are 10x better than maps of today like Gaylo 2. Q3A I didn't like that much and played the least of them all.

We fired up a quick LAN game of GLQuake last night. It was great. Your player moves SO fast, but it makes the game very fast paced and fun.

1 would win, but I think there is a large crowd here that wasn't around at the time where they could have experienced it.

The best CTF mod was the original Expert CTF. It came out before Threewave CTF and used a all of Quake1's ingame models. Basically, one team had a silver key for a flag and the other team had a red key for the flag. There were 4 or 5 runes and they were the same purple runes from the single player game. There was a grappling hook and it was made up of the Vore's (spider thing) purple projectile attack. The best part was it used the original levels from the game as CTF levels. Since these levels were not created for CTF, each base was entirely unique and the levels had a very crazy feel to it.

IE, one of the best original Quake1 maps for CTF was the Elder God Shrine (E3M4 I believe). One team had their base in the graveyard that you could get to from underwater only and one team had their base at the end of a floor that moved when people ran across it to reveal a huge lava trap. This bases were, by design, equally unfair, which made the base attacks extremely unique and fun. Another fun aspect of the map is that it had something like 3 quads.

<3 Quake1

Agreed. Q1 did start it all. Competitive gaming, the graphic/video card craze, community mods etc. I remember lanning with 8 other guys for hours playing clan area.

Q1 was the original so it definitely deserves the award, but I chose Q3 because I've been playing it regularly since it was released. Well, technically now I play ET, which is based on Q3.

Quake 2.

Mods made it worthwhile. Quake 1 was rather revolutionary but it cant hold a candle to Q2's gameplay.
