Warcleric,
Don't know why this is such a fun conversation, but it is.
Powermonger and Populous were true RTS, not turn-based. As far as I know, they were only made for the Amiga platform. I think, actually, that Populous was ported to another platform several years later. Anyway, these two games were truly ahead of their time. Settlers, which someone mentioned as their favorite game early on, was a watered down version of Powermonger that came out years later.
Anyway, when I think back to those games, I really do get nostalgic. I'm not kidding, Populous as playable as it was on the Amiga would be a strong seller on the PC today. It was just incredibly addictive and a beautiful game to boot. It ran off of 2 floppies.
I think the thing that was to me amazing about the Amiga was the arcade-iness of it. I still have a hard time believing that any of the more versatile machines such as the Apple 2G had games that were anywhere near the sheer fun of Speedball 2.
I'm jealous of you for keeping your old equipment. This conversation has made me wish I still had Speedball 2 and could fire it up this weekend.
Cheers,
Wes Huang
