If you're in Cali, try Beringer's Cab Sauv. Pricy, but awesome.

Try Masi's Campofiorin.

If you can get it, Inniskillin's Pinot Grigio is cheap and tasty. (Go Canada!)

Inniskillin Icewine is unbelievable. Small bottle (375ml), but worth every drop. I have two bottles of Vidal 2001 VQA sitting on my wine rack for special occasions.

any white wine that comes from Italy or France.

my local liquor store has a section devoted just to sweet wines, so I'll usually take a random bottle from there. I like just about everything I buy, but nothing so much that I'm willing to buy it more than once. I'm still searching for my perfect wine

I wouldn't say any. There is a lot of swill that comes out of France. Some that's blended so many times that it retains no terroir character, and others that are just not as blessed with the terroir of some of the best Bordeaux, Burgundy, Loire, etc. regions. It's very important to understand what's on the label, because that will almost always tell you what kind of a wine you are getting. There is also a lot of French wine that doesn't get exported that's exceptionally bad.

Hmm, I'm gonna go buy some wine this week. I've been meaning to find one of the fancy openers cheap somewhere. Mine likes to eat corks.
Haven't yet sampled any of the Cabernets as of yet. Be certain to give us a report should you do so before I do.

As far as dealing with corks is concerned, received this set from Williams-Sonoma as a gift, and I cannot imagine opening bottles without it. There are similar knockoffs I have tried while at friends' homes, but none rival the quality or the smooth operation of the one mentioned above.

ActuaryTm's recommendation is solid if you're willing to forfeit the cash. I have that same one he referenced, but I also have the standard winged corkscrew (similar to this), and I find myself using this more often. The winged corkscrew from Williams Sonoma is solid, and it's only like $10.

Have you ever tried Ice Wine? The ripest vine inc in NY makes it. It runs about 160/bottle which isn't bad for a good desert wine. My Mom brings it back from there about every 3 months. I will get a link for you, you can't beat this wine.

Well I work for the countries largest distributor of Wine & Spirits so you'd think I'd have some kind of idea....

But no clue, all I do is go to the liquor store and ask for whats the best white wine for $xyz and have yet to be disappointed. Or just drink whatever they give me from work from time to time.

I used to be a wine maker...pressed my own grapes, soaked the oaked barrels and all that good stuff...my grapes came from Cali so any real wine from grapes is great...made both red and white..the white tasted like a Champagne Chardonnay while the red was a bit more robust and oakey....

Champagne Chardonnay? Was it a sparling wine? Presumably it tastes like the grapes you used, so I'm assuming Chardonnay for white, but what about the red?

I wish I lived in a region where I could buy proper grapes.

More thumbs up for Aussie Reds...

My favorite all purpose "cheap" wine is from Jacob's Creek
Shiraz Cabernet (runs about $7 - $8)
Semillon Chardonnay ($8 - $9)

As Descarte mentioned Black Opal Cab/Merlot is pretty nice as well.

From Italy, Gabbiano Chianti is nice... 2002 is about $10

I seem to recall a Pinot Noir from Bogle (Napa Valley I think) being quite good.

Several local "gourmet" wine stores have tastings on Friday/Saturday evenings, adn that can be a great way to pick up some new favorites.

Opus One cabernet blend any pre-2000 vintage. Cost Plus typically has the best prices on these.
