when was the last time diesel was normally cheaper than gas?
Hm, looking at my logs, on 10/6/21 I paid $3.719 for unleaded, and on 10/14/21 $3.449 for diesel.
The point isn't whether diesel is cheaper, it's that the disparity between the two isn't normally that large.

I was always told that gas stations only made a few cents from each gallon, and the bulk of their money came from inside purchases.

At an average of ~2500 gal/day sold and an average of ~14 cents/gal markup, the average station makes $354/day markup on gas. That works out to $129k/year. It isn't nothing. But it does depend a lot on the size of the station and the competition in the area. A 2 pump station will make far less than an 8 pump station. You are correct though that other items tend to be more of the profit (car washes are especially profitable).

In other words, the price of gas has nearly zero effect on how much profit any gas station owner makes let alone "mom & pop" stations? That would mean Fox is misleading people? I need my fainting couch.

price of oil dropped like 8% today.
from yesterdays close of $103/barrel to today's close of $95.

how soon before that price drop trickles down the pump price?

That cheaper oil needs to be shipped to the refineries, refined, ordered by the gas stations, shipped to the gas stations, and then wait for the game of chicken for the gas stations near each other to see who blinks first. I'd say a month. But, that assumes that anyone decides to lower prices. Right now the I thought the profits are all at the refineries. There is no reason that they have to drop gas prices even if oil prices drop as long as demand is still high.

Don't know the exact reason for the drop in price, but the price at Sam's in Tallahassee has dropped from $4.24 one week ago to $4.09 today. Hopefully that continues to go down.

Amusing that you mention the car washes. My local Kroger doesn't have a car wash, yet the gas pump prompts if you'd like one.

Price is down a bit, $4.42 yesterday.

WTI continues to slump. My guess is $ strengh because of the rate hikes. You might even see another 10-20c drop soonish.

On the drive to CA lowest I saw was a Sam's Club at 4.09. Though prices at all stations overall lower 20-30 cents from a month or so ago seems like.
