Gas actually below 2 bucks here now. Didn't think I'd see that. $1.94/litre.

Topped up the gas tank since I was out for an oil change and gas station was just next door. Felt silly putting $9 of gas in the tank lol. I thought I would have ended up putting more but I did top up like a week ago and been mostly working from home.

Russia cut off gas supply to Europe and Ukrainian US embassy has evacuated. Lot of interesting stuff going on politically that I presume might cause another hike.

What boggles my mind is that so many countries, us included, are so reliant on other countries for oil and gas, and well energy in general. That's too important of a resource imo to put all your eggs in one basket like that. I guess it's up to individuals to be prepared for this stuff. Have a backup power source, backup heat, etc. Of course gas for car is kind of hard to have a backup for unless you have a lot of money for an EV.

Many places decided to embrace sprawl. We didn't have to do this. We used to have walkable towns and cities that also had mass transit, and a variety of different types of housing. Then we bowed at the altar of the wasteful mass adoption of single family homes, suburbs, and general car-centric living.

Are you implying everyone should live in big cities and not own a house? Yeah no thanks. You could not pay me enough for that. I will take the small trade off of needing to drive to get to most places while living in a small city and actually owning a house and land.

The solution to car related pollution is EVs, but they do need to bring the costs down so they can be accessible to average people. Big rigs, airplanes, ships etc contribute a lot more pollution than passenger cars as well so solutions need to be figured out for those too. A lot can be done to help all of that, but shoving people in cities is not the answer. We should not be compromising quality of life.

Plenty of rural towns had small downtown areas for commercial properties and offered a mix of housing in and nearby - from apartments, to towhouses, and even detached housing. Nothing stopping people from living in the woods though. It's certainly not for everyone, but the current paradigm is largely driving everyone towards detached single family homes, sprawl, and car dependence in an ever growing expanse of suburbs.

If you like rural living, good for you. However, most people live in urban and suburban environments, so we probably shouldn't make large planning decisions around the relatively small group of people that want to live in rural areas.

The solution to car-related pollution is not only EVs - the bigger thing is to just get people out of their cars altogether. The damage from personal automobiles is not just about air quality and fossil fuels: it's also about the waste created by paving tons land for parking, the ever growing expansion of freeways and other supporting infrastructure, and also just the economic cost of supporting sprawling personal auto infrastructure and the impacts on people's household budgets to maintain 1+ vehicle per adult. We need to think more holistically: building smarter communities where people can get by with 1 car per family or less, because there are alternative and safe ways for them to get where they want to go on a regular basis (ie, frequent mass transit, complete streets for walking/cycling/whatever). This reality isn't some ridiculous idea either: we had done this in the past, and there are many places in Western Europe where this is a reality.

Ah, this exchange is just too precious, I'll distill it.

1.94/litre here for regular and 199/litre for diesel.

Kind of crazy to think that this is a bargain right now lol. Bought some premium ethanol free for the ATV the other day and I felt like a big shot actually buying premium lol. I'd like to get to a point where I don't need gas anymore but reality is a lot of stuff still runs on it. Could be a fun project to electric convert the ATV though at some point. I also want to do my snow blower. I think the engine might even be blown, I need to take everything apart and troubleshoot it. Last winter I ended up just using the electric snow shovel most of the time anyway. It works great for everything except the snow bank when plow goes by.

Costco $3.89 Tallahassee
I'm in NC, but we go to Costco over the line every couple of months. $4.049 at the Sam's club here. SC gas tax is 13¢ less than NC. Of course, I'm driving my diesel, and neither sell diesel.
