Years ago, when gas prices spiked (I guess 2000 or so) I made the decision to not be an idiot and pretend that gas prices were going to stay the same price forever and never be impacted by things like inflation to unique events.
In the 2000's I thought gas prices were going to hit $8+ a gallon by 2015 or at the very least we'd start to see what Europe sees.
I have no idea what gas prices are. I no longer look at the price when I fill up the car. Just grab the handle, hit premium and fill up.
(Though I am a dork and now have little book in the glove box where I track maintenance and fill-ups but I do that not because of cost tracking but MPG tracking as that can reveal problems if fuel economy takes a dip) I don't care if it's $1 a gallon or $10 a gallon.
The only reason I don't own an electric or hybrid is because I only buy manual transmission cars. I like driving stick. I get enjoyment out of it and will continue to buy them until they don't make them anymore. Some people demand leather seats? I demand row your own. We don't put a lot of mileage on our cars, I take public transportation for the bulk of my commute and the wife works 5 miles away.
This sucks for a lot of people with short fucking memory spans.
Lets forget about the 20th century...
What about 21st?
Crisis of 2000?
Crisis of 2008?
Crisis of 2011?
How many times is everyone going to shit their pants when prices jump?
