I had my Raptor develop bad sectors. WD quickly sent me a new one and I was able to save my data. I sent in my old drive and they refunded me the advance replacement money.

Every HD that I've bought and installed in my systems are still in good working order, including the 1GB Quantum Fireball from circa 1995.

Wow - this is probably the only instance I've heard of a deathstar of the 75gxp era still running. I wanted that drive so bad for my first rig, but had to settle for the 30 gig model as the 75 was simply too pricey. And even then, the 30 gig ran me almost 200 clams. Pretty amazing how the price/gigs of hard drives has come down so dramatically in 5 years.

Well, my IBM Deskstar 45GXP is still running normally.

I have two old drives, a Maxtor 40GB and a Quantum/Maxtor (right around merger time) 20GB drive that are well over 2 years old. The Maxtor is closer to 5 years old and the Quantum is about 3 1/2 to 4 years old. Bot still going strong, not a bad sector on either. My two newer drives are only 5-6 months old, so too early to tell. My original 6.4GB WD from 1998 that came with my Gateway G6-350 is still going strong as a secondary drive in a PC I built for my dad.

Had my first drive fail on me a few weeks ago. It was a 40GB 5400RPM Western Digital. Actually it isn't even completely dead yet, but SMART tells me it is about to die, and it makes all kinda noise. I backed it up and used it as an excuse to build a new a64 rig.

Before I switched to PATA/SATA I used to run 18 scsi HDs for over 5 years and not one ever died. As a matter of fact, I recently booted em up after being off for about 2 years and they all work great albeit noisy as hell! (which is why I switched to PATA/SATA)
My six PATA/SATA drives in my main system have been working great, even the maxtor. I believe of the six drives, the oldest is about 2 1/2 years. I still worry about the Maxtor SATA drive. Just being paranoid cuz I have seen so many Maxtor croak at work.

My bro gave me another HD to use a couple years ago, Western Digital, 40 GB, date on the HD is 07 NOV 2002. It burned out on me a couple weeks ago; the power thing is completely dead. This may not be the HD's fault though -- it was really that my power supply went kaput, and took out the HD in the process (but the other one survived). Now I'm looking into how to recover the data on this HD. No idea how.

Had 2 drives die on me:

1) a Maxtor 5ish gb drive, when Maxtor sucked royally for awhile

2) 13gb IBM Deathstar

Both lasted just over 1 year before crapping out. HDs are one thing I always kind of worry about in the back of my mind. So much can go wrong with them compared to other parts of a PC. I always take other peoples experiences, reviews, and Warranty periods as most likely Moot for me!

Yeah... there is another one still running in my parent's machine, too. I guess we just got a lucky batch.

However, I will say that I don't keep anything of value on the Deskstar. I use it solely as a scratch disk. Even I'm not that brave... hehe.

What's your hard disk life like?

Rather sedintary, it rarely moves. It is very active though. It likes to move its arms in a sweeping motion and it constantly spins in circles. I really don't understand how it doesn't get dizzy.

The closest I've had to an HD failure at home is when a bad power splitter cable caused one to restart about 50 times in the middle of the night. It collected some bad sectors. At work I've had 3 HD failures. All in Gateway PCs and all in less than two months of getting a new system.

I've only had WD disks fail but it's been after years of service, sometimes still w/in the warranty.

I have owned a total of 7 hard-drives of various makes and capacities and never had one fail.
In fact, I still have an 8 year old Western Digital 10 gig that went through the fire when my house burned in 2000. The whole system melted down around the hard-drive. After breaking the case apart to remove it and letting it dry out for a few days I reinstalled it in a new machine and it's still running to this day in my daughters computer.

I've had them fail in under 3 months (Maxtors with bad sectors, Hitachi 180GXP with click of death), I've had them fail after a little over year (IBM 120GXP, head crash), I've had them fail after a few years (old Western Digital 8.4GB), and I've had some that still work (JTS Corp 2.5GB drive - lasted longer than its company did).
They seem to fail whenever they feel like it. I've done RMA's with Hitachi, Maxtor, Western Digital, and Samsung. Never done one with Seagate yet though - however, I haven't owned many Seagates until recently.

I've had two 60GXP Deskstars fail, both after about a year. The other 8 or so drives I've bought never failed, and many are still kicking around somewhere. In particular, the 13GB Deskstar that came with my first personal PC in 1999 still runs beautifully after several years of 24/7 use. These days, it's enjoying the glory of semi-retirement in a rarely used lab box. I still get warm fuzzy feelings when it spins up though.

All of this is totally unscientific, of course. I'd trust StorageReview's reliability database a lot more than a random thread.
