This was in the 60's. Not really a depressionary mentality, they just weren't wealthy and wanted to save.

I want to say you can still do it fairly easily. You just use leftovers and cook two meals at once.

It's what we do!!!

Finally a reasonable person. T Hat is about right (especially if you eat out a lot).

I use Mint pretty religiously, helps keep track of these things...also, it does vary depending on where you live. My food expenditures went up quite a bit when I moved from the northeast to Seattle. Meat, especially, is considerably more expensive out here...and I eat a lot of meat.

I'd say like, $75 a week on groceries, $30 a week on bfast and lunch at work and maybe once or twice a month I will go out, for average bill of like $40. So overall, ~$500..Just little ol me.

$1000-1200/mo Including comsumables (TP, paper towels, diapers x2, wipes, shampoo, other stuff from the grocery store).

Two adults, one toddler, one baby, and one big dog.

We shop the local pesticide/hormone free farms when available. BJ's Wholesale club for the majority of our grocerys otherwise.

Before I moved in with my wife and we settled into a house(still in school), I was the king of eating frugal. I'd make a 2 gallon vat of spaghetti, goulosh, or chili, and I had lunch and dinner for a week. Never ate out, and snagged TP from the school. Food bill was $150 bi weekly.

shit i do like $250-400/week between the S.O. and i. 1 day out of the week food is homemade. the rest involves a sit down restaurant.

working from home made it worse than being out in the field (fast food).

being pescatarian and living with a woman who doesnt cook isnt much help either.

I take my GF out every weekend. I go out to lunch every day. I often go out with friends once a week or so. I spend maybe $600-$900 depending on the month. But that's sorta food + entertainment to some extent. That includes any bar tabs or visits to liquor store which usually average out to like ... 50 bucks or so a month. Also includes my daily coffee addiction.

Are you sure about that? Processed foods tend to be a lot cheaper than fresh foods. That's part of the reason our grocery bill is so expensive is I'm into weight training and don't eat many processed meats or boxed foods.

Some but not all processed foods are cheaper than fresh. Canned tomatoes are cheaper than fresh ones which is one processed food that I buy. The ready made stuff for grilling/baking in the fresh meat section is more expensive than equivalent fresh meat + marinade +spices.

Monday: Cook 3 lbs of ground beef, Take 2 pounds of ground beef mix with soy and make tacos.
Tuesday: Eat left over tacos.
Wednesday: Take 1 lb of ground beef mix with spaghetti sauce and have spaghetti with cheap side salad.
Thursday: Roasted chicken (2), potato and veggies.
Friday: Use chicken carcass to make soup, with vegetables and noodles
Saturday: Leftover soup
Sunday: Grill out/brisket or pot roast.

this is what we do. Most times we eat leftovers for lunch. Left over Carcass? make soup with.

also a little planning helps. such as if we Do turkey we get a 12-15 lb one. we eat portion one day, freeze a big chunk, and have sandwiches and such the next day or to for lunch. latter we unfreeze adn eat the rest.

also buy in bulk and freeze what you can. it saves money and taste just fine.

IF you have time and space a garden provides TONS of veggies
