I'll go for Lord of the Rings movies...they were dead boring. Office Space was good but not great.

darko-ok music video sequences, otherwise incomplete and empty
gone with the wind-didn't care, scarlett shoulda shown her boobs
children of men-just didn't care. sure its a nice production visually but the story is just thin and pointless.
babel-directors trying to be deep and failing is just sad
history of violence-more fake "deep" stuff
citizen cain-break through for its time, boring now
lord of the rings which is just tacky like starwars prequels but where very few feel like pointing it out
2001-i don't take drugs...so i can't enjoy this one

I think a lot of you aren't understanding the concept of overrated. Mentions of X-Men and Spiderman don't really fit the bill of being overrated since critically they didn't do that well (especially X-Men). There's a difference between selling and being regarded highly.

Brokeback Mountain- people liked this wayy too much for being socially progressive, little beyond the homosexual themes
Gone With The Wind- unfocused and random, a mess when you think about it and remove the "classic" legacy that keeps this on a pedestal.
Kung Fu Hustle/Shaolin Soccer- No joke, these movies are highly regarded critically (both have a 90% on RT). Yet, it really isn't that much different from most other asian comedies or comedy in general. Consider this a case of orientalism. Since its a new and easternized thing to us, it naturally did better even though stuff like this already readily exists.
Million Dollar Baby- cheesy story, predictable, awkward dialog. The bias of the Clint Eastwood fan club drove this one way too far.
Spirited Away- it really hurts me to say this, I actually really liked this movie. But, it certainly isn't worthy of a 97% on RT and the title of one of the greatest animated movies of all time. It's predecessor, Princess Mononoke, was a much better film.

yup its the critics darling films and oscar winner/nominees/"classics" that be overrated. not some film that was considered sh*t or just silly good mass entertainment.

I love threads like these because eventually they digress into semantic debates, arguing over what should be considered "overrated", or whatever other adjective the OP uses. When originally he just chose that word so the topic title wouldn't be 25 words long. So silence your noncontributive jibba jabba and let me quote the OP's post...

After seeing some people's lists, I honestly have to wonder why some of you bother watching movies at all as you seem to hate just about every type of movie out there.

For me, personally, the most recent film that I've heard people do nothing but rave about is the Illusionist. I swear there is no way I watched the same movie as other people, as there is nothing special about that movie at all. The acting is tame, the plot cliche, and the twist was so obvious that I don't think you could even call it a twist. The entire story was a drawn out version of those little tales that get told to give a character a backstory in movies (which by the way, this movie actually has one in it even), only filled with pointless suspense (if you can call it that) and magic tricks.

I'm going to watch the Prestige sometime and compare them myself, but as it is, other than my roomate, who pretty much agrees with me about the Illusionist, everyone else says the Illusionist is better than the Prestige.

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby....All my friends loved it. I think i laughed maybe once....very overrated.

As a man of the world, I think of "everyone else I know" as the aggregate internet community, hence, I use IMDB to define what movies are "love[d]" by "everyone else I know"

Now I know people here, and I know that it's pretty hard to follow directions for the ATOT crowd. So I'll use small words. What's to you the most overrated movie. I don't mean the one you hate the most. I mean the one that everyone else you know loves, but you think doesn't live up to the hype.
