If it's not close I just leave everything on. I have a surge protected power board (and I'm pretty sure my wireless network card wont get hit if another computer on the network fries).

But if it's close, i crawl under my desk and unplug my tower and monitor.

If we took a look at statistical probabilities of danger/mishap in our lives, we might be well advised to avoid motor vehicles.

Everything important to me is plugged into a surge protector. In the event of a storm, I just leave it all on (if it's on atm).

If the lightning is close, I turn it off and hide in the doorway.

I do nothing. If lightning fries my comp I get free dough to rebuild (surge protectors don't protect your comp from lightning but they think they can so they have that 5,000 or 50,000 or whatever worth of protection). Never had any lightning strike my house though so no free comp for me .

To those that say you cannot survive a direct hit you can. It takes engineering and money.

Do you think the 911 call centers unplug their phones and systems when it's thundering? Of course not! Ditto for casinos.

You haven't experienced a storm until you've been through one at sea! When you cannot tell the difference between the sky and the ocean and when lightning flashes it just lights up everwhere like you have a big sheet over your head. The roar of the sea is so great the only thing you hear is the crack of the initial lightning! Careful! Because if you do, it's probably striking the ship! Best thing to do is go to the bar drink your ass off.

If you have typical wiring and ground system you should be ok unless you live in an area that gets frequent strikes. If you have essential equipment you should think about investing in an isolation transformer.

You might as well plug right into the naked box then. Grounding is ESSENTIAL for the surge protector to work. It's like going fishing with a net that has a hole in it. You can catch (a surge) but have no place for it to go! No ground = surge protector is as useful as tits on a bull!

If it's a normal storm, just keep on using the computer

If it's a big storm, turn it off and get on a laptop.

If it's a BIG storm, then I unplug my two favorite computers and hope the rest make it
