The only other thing to think about is simple.

A decent car, 20K, over a 10 year span 9especially in a place like NJ!)

$20K/10yr
$1K/yr insurance (average, higher for younger, lower for older)
$1K/yr gas (10K miles, 25mpg, $2.50/gal)
$160/yr oil
$100/yr tires
$250/yr repairs/misc

You start getting about $4500 a year! (ymmv).

That is a lot of $$ to spend just for convenience.

When I was in Hoboken I put only 3K a year on the car. I only kept it for visiting family and in laws. NOW I have a 20 mile commute that has no convenient mass transit and I need the car.

But I was always asking myself if I really needed to be spending so much money for something I had only as a convenience.....

Bingo. It's a lot to spend for convenience. One thing is that "pleasure" insurance isn't much of a savings vs. someone who commutes using a vehicle, and the maintenance costs are significant either way.

If I had more widespread car-sharing in my city, I might be convinced to sell my car and use that instead.

Hoboken just started Zip cars, and a LOT of people are using them.

Just seems to make sense, you know?

98 out of 100 where I am going to be living. 73 transit score.

23 out of 100 where I am living. (Makes sense since everything is at least a mile away)

Definitely. Rent something when you need it and don't pay a premium to have it sitting there going unused a lot of the time. I think it would be a great solution for many people.

Insurance is the NJ killer.

Even driving your car 3K a year, simply parking in Hoboken makes your insurance skyrocket. (And no, there is no real data backing up any additional risk to your vehicle. This is just the insurance companies securing their 25 cents on the dollar profit margin).

But yeah, they started about 2 years ago and many times since I have seen most of them out of their assigned spots (already rented).....

LMAO, they list as nearby restaurants the tiny [20 ft x 20 ft] country store [1.64 miles away] that sells reheated frozen pizza by the slice during lunch.

98/100, 100/100 transit. Downtown Boston right next to the financial district.

Where do all y'all other people live getting 98?
