We've got an '06 Chevy Aveo, and between the speeds of 40-55mph, the wheel vibrates/shakes. If we brake or slow down (or speed up beyond that), it stops. The car doesn't appear to have any pull in either direction, which makes sense since it was aligned about a month or two ago.

I was thinking maybe one of the front tires were developing a bubble or something else that was causing the vibration since the front tires are pretty old, but what do you guys think? Anything I could check myself?

Start with the simplest answer....get the tires rebalanced. If that doesn't cure it, then go looking for more difficult/expensive to fix options.

First check air and adjust to decal inside of drivers door psi. If tred is 2/32" or lower replace. If good rotate tires. That will tell you if its the tires.

Rotate the wheels/tires and see if the problem follows the front wheels to the rear. If that doesn't fix it you need new brake rotors.

My money, literally f**king every penny, is on your tires needing to be changed and/or rebalanced.

A slipped belt normaly will cause this at all speeds so more likely what others have said about balance of the tires and if they are that old then why not replace them... Even with some tread left they can be dry rotted and this summer heat will leave you on the side of the road (hopefuly not in the ditch) if anything is even close to failure...

Look at the tread wear on the fronts, they may be worn unevenly due to bad alignment and causing speed wobbles. I had this happen to me last year and the only way to fix it was a new set of tires and an alignment.

My vote is tires followed by alignment. A decent shop should be willing to check the alignment for under $30.
