When a bottle of wine cost $3,750 and not $37.50 at dinner.

We have a few faults here:

-A waitress who recommends a $3750 bottle of wine when a diner asks said waitress to recommend something decent. Someone who doesn't know the first thing about wine is not going to want to spend 4 figures on a bottle. There are many $50 and under wines that could have satisfied this guy. I cannot fault the waitress for pushing the expensive bottle of wine. After all, we all have to try and sell the items that will generate the most money for the restaurant. Not the waitress' fault but this bears mentioning.

-Ambiguous language of the waitress. The words "thirty-seven-fifty" mean $37.50 to me and not $3750.00. Regardless the price was printed on everyone's menu and the article mentions the entire table was in unison in agreeing on this wine. I dont feel the diner's lack of glasses should be a fault of the waitress

-The sommelier showed up with the corked bottle and asked the diner to approve. Diner admits to being distracted by table conversation and approved the bottle. Diner tasted a sample and again approved; bottle placed on the table. No indication if price again was mentioned

In short, I feel this was caused by the ambiguous language of the waitress. I dont think she bears all of the responsibility though. Due to the prices being posted and visible to not just one but all of the diners, I can't assign 100% blame to the waitress.

I think the restaurant was gracious to offer a part reduction in price but I dont think the diners should receive a write-off on the bill for just the wine.

all of this.

There is absolutely zero value in spending ridiculous amounts of money when you don't have to.

There are plenty of good restaurants that don't cost ridiculous price per plate. A standard bar and grill place that is ~$25/plate is just as good. A good portion of the experience is about the people you are with, not the place you're at.

A meal only lasts for about an hour or two. It is completely ridiculous to spend 100's of dollars for 1 meal for 1 person. That money could buy an item that will last much longer.

You can say the same for anything. I assume you don't go on vacations either.

sigh, its said that people actually believe this

the difference between your run of the mill restaurant that costs ~25$ an entrée and a high end place is like the difference between a Yugo and a Bugatti
Ill admit there isn't a lot of difference in the places that are under 50-75$ a plate but once you start going above that the differences grow exponentially

gawd.. this reminds me of the time my wife convinced me to go to the Pet store to "look" at dogs. After petting a few, she urged me to ask the clerk how much this particular pooch was.

she responded "fourteen ninety nine".

I thought "fantastic, we'll get two!"

Then I looked around and saw that each dog came with their shots and papers and whatever-else crap and turned to my wife and said "There's no way we're paying fifteen hundred dollars for a goddamned dog".

that's when she left the store crying.

that is such a stupid blanket statement. it's obvious from your posts here though that you don't enjoy the finer things in life. whether it's because you can't afford them or don't want to, who knows.

the 2nd bolded just goes to show how little you must have experienced in life. i'm guessing you have never traveled anywhere or experienced much outside of your comfort zone in your every day life.

again, nothing wrong with that, but to say spending $100 for an experience that lasts an hour or so, and say it's not worth it, is just a sad view on life imo. there is so much more to life than spending money on the latest tech gadgets and tangible items.

Agreed.. it's like saying an hour with a $50 hooker is the same as an hour with a $500 hooker

This happened to me in Texas, except it was for shots of tequila instead of a bottle of wine.

We asked the bartender to recommend a shot because it was a tequila bar so there were tons to choose from. He points out a few and we asked the price of one of them and he says "Four Fifty".

You can tell what we thought he meant and what the actual price was. Long story short cops were called after we had 2 shots ordered. The cops actually called the DA and asked if the bar had a case against us and they said no. We walked out without paying anything for the food / beers / expensive shots because the GM of the bar was so upset.

I could swear I made a post about this when it happened, but I can't find it.

Yeah that's complete BS.

Also a 450 dollar shot. Really? Who the hell would ever buy that.

My story is BS?

I will say the tequila was definitely above average, but nothing I'd come near paying $450 for.

I'll have to search more for the original post, I could swear I posted about it.

No, the fact that the bartender pointed out a 450 a shot bottle of tequila is ridiculous.

Isn't that stuff usually behind a glass case or something.

I don't care how good the food is, no single meal is worth 100's of dollars. Spending that kind of money is just poor financial decision making. Food is a consumable and is something you will always need. Paying 10x more than you have to for one instance is not going to give you much value out of that money. When it comes to spending 100's of dollars I would rather spend it on physical objects that would last more than the night. Unless I'm being generous and I'm paying for everybody at my table at a normal restaurant, then that's different. That money fed lot of people not just me.

Please stop embarrassing yourself. Its hard to read.

Thinking back, I think they did have it on its own "pedestal" but it wasn't anything that stuck out as lots of different ones were on pedestals. It seemed like a design for the place because they really made it look nice.

I can't find a full story that I posted, but I did mention it 2 yrs ago:

He looks like a schmuck.

1) pick up the fucking wine menu
2) point to what you want,.. or, ask the waiter to point to what they are recommending
3) read and review the price
4) decide if you want to order it

Done.

It's a plate of food and / or drinks,.. if someone has to hold your hand through the experience, then stay home or just stick to Apple Bees.

I think it's the other way around. People don't seem to realize how completely retarded it is to pay over 10x the price for something that is MAYBE 2x as better as something you can get at 1/10th the price. Basic financial management.

Then again, this is atot, if a meal does not cost at least 200 bucks then it's considered garbage. The high priced restaurant business must be ludicrous though. It's basically the Monster Cables of food and there are enough people who are actually willing to pay for it.

LOL that is hilarious.

I'm more interested in the "1 Seafood Tower .................... $135"

How much of a tower are we talking? Eiffel? Willis? Is it leaning?

I ordered a seafood tower at the Ritz Restaurant in Newport Beach and it cost about the same amount. It wasn't exactly a tower but man it was good.

I think the most I've ever spent on a bottle of wine at a restaurant was around $30-40. I'm siding with the customer on this one. Who recommends a $3,750 bottle of wine to someone who says he doesn't know a whole lot about wine and is asking for a recommendation?

Or explain to the waitress that you have a visual impairment and ask for her help not expecting her to try to pull a fast one?

How do you define how good it is? What does 2x mean?

Do you drive a toyota tercel, eat beans every meal and live in a 1 room log cabin? How do you decide any of your purchases with thinking like that?

If you can afford something and want to experience it, maybe '2x' (whatever that means) IS worth it for 10x the price.

Try to think outside of your little box for a change. Like i said, you are embarrassing yourself by acting so ignorant and superior at the same time.
