How would anyone know unless you were friends on Facebook or in real life?

I wonder how many of our brothers and sisters passed on without any of us knowing...

Probably quite a few. I don't know anyone on here outside of the forums, so the only way I'll know if you all die at once is if I'm alone here.

In the past we've been informed by family members of the deceased posting here. I tend to assume that anyone with a "Last visited" status exceeding a few years (unless they're totally awesome and successful individuals) left us for the great archive.

I was thinking that once, if I was to die nobody at any forums or other online places would really know about it. Not that anybody would even care. I tend to keep my real life stuff like Facebook separate from online stuff like forums.

Basically if all my sites stop working and emails sent to me bounce and it stays that way, it probably means I'm dead and the server is permanently down due to the bill not being paid. That, or it could mean that I got some kind of cease and desist order of sorts and I've gone off grid permanently.

The connections we make as people matter. Why wouldn't you care if a fellow member died or whether or not anyone knew you had died? Do you really think so little of yourselves or those you have grown to know in our community?

People die. I've been here for more than thirteen years and while I might miss a handful of people from here, I can't think of anyone I'd really grieve over. I am generally fairly callous though.

If I died, I don't think anyone here would know or care, which is fine.

I was able to let someone know just this past week that I was almost certainly going to die, but obviously I didn't. This place has been something I've participated in for a long time and I've grown fond of a few. What I'm going to do is give my personal information to someone who I've had a good relationship with and in the event of my prolonged absence he'll be able to contact my family and he can pass the word along for the few that care. I don't expect a weeping and gnashing of teeth when it happens, but it seems right to let those who I've had significant interaction with know out of courtesy.

It's one of the big questions of the digital age. IIRC, we found out Dennil had died because someone knew him in real life. There are services now though that take your account info then notify people that you're dead.
